Is there a program or mechanism that prevents people from opening up a specific application?

For example, let's say I don't mind people having access to my computer, but I do not want them opening up my tax program. So, if someone tried to open the tax program, a password must be entered before the tax program could open.

This needs to be on applications I chose, not all applications, nor be built into applications. For example I may want to limit access to games--whatever.

Does such a thing exist?

gcoyne,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. You do have a built in program for exactly what you want.

Each user can have their own log in name and password. You can do this in System Preferences > Accounts.

Once you have set up a user, you can set him/her to access only specific applications and folders. This can be done by clicking on the new users name, then click on capabilities. Now you can select specific applications.

All their documents will be saved in their own documents folder in their home folder. All their preferences will also be saved in their own preference folder.

Make sure you click on Login Options to set what you would like. List of users is a good choice. Once they click on their name, they must enter in their password.

Hi Cheryl,

Yeah, I know that can be done and I know how to do that, but it's much more than I feel is necessary to accomplish what I want to do. Unfortunately this approach is like building multiple houses with multiple furniture when all I want to do is put a lock on the ice box for everyone but me.

What I'm looking for is an application that you can tell which applications to monitor and if any of them are started, you need to enter a password before the application continues to full startup. That's it.

Thanks anyway,

Gary

Gary,

I understand what you are saying about the additional accounts. I also think I found what you are looking for. Check out:

I am not sure you can select specific applications, programs or games, but you can hide your documents - and applications that are in their own folder.
