Description:
I have an audio tape recording that I want to put onto my HD, and then eventually to a CD (via my burner). I only have a microphone jack for audio input. What is the best method for doing this? I had thought about getting a double-ended cable that I could plug into a walkman headphone jack and then into the mic jack, but dont know if the amplification would damage my computer. Also, what is the best software available for making such a recording? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi Greg, greetings from No Wonder!
Basically, the use of the audio tape and microphone jack is going to limit the quality of your recording to the point where the specific method doesn't make too much of a difference. ;-) So, connecting the headphone jack directly to the microphone jack should work just fine; just adjust the volume of the tape player to a level "audible" to the computer (the "Play Through" function of SndSampler [see below] should help here).
Similarly, most any sound-processing program will take full advantage of the microphone port, and thus do the job nicely. SndSampler, a simple shareware recording application, should work fine:

If you need a more heavy-duty solution, Macromedia's SoundEdit 16 is also very good (
