I own a copy of Apple's .Mac Backup software and my .Mac membership is current. I am running on a 12" PowerBook (2005) with a Combo Drive, 1.5Ghz Processor on 10.4.2. I have not yet been able to successfully perform a multi-CD backup. I can set it up and burn the first disc, but when I insert the second disc, Backup copies it's files but when it comes time to start burning, it spits out the CD complaining that it's got a problem. After this, I can try any number of brand new CDs and it always yields the same response. If I subsequentlytry any of the discs for regular burns (CD-R) it works with no problem at all.

You might consider using Retrospect or Impression (versiontracker.com) instead of Backup for making multi-disk backups. Among other things they free you from any need to be tied to your iDisk or .Mac for backups.

Micah,

The problem you are experiencing is because Combo Drive does not like those new large capacity CDs , especially the CD-RW ones.

Your only option, if you want to burn your back up to a CD is to use the CD-R blank media.

Also, you should take advantage of your .Mac account and back up the most important folders there.

Thanks, Cheryl and Steven.

Steven: I am thinking of taking a look at Retrospect, but I'm a student and buying software I already have paid for doesn't make me happy.

Cheryl: I am using a stack of 700MB CD-R. Do I need to switch down to 650s or something? I've got a support ticket in over at Apple and they're 'looking into it' so I'm hoping for resolution in the near future from them, but this was much faster and quite informative.

Micah,

Switch to the 650 MB media as that will work on your combo drive.

Backup will work for you. Do not worry about purchasing another program. I do understand about being a student.
