Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Hardware
Computer Type: Apple
Model: Power Mac Performa 6116
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: Not related

Description:
This may be a repeat as I lost connection as I was submitting the form.

I am an experienced PC / network administrator but my troubleshooting skills are somewhat lacking in regards to the Mac as it hasn't never given any trouble in 3 years of use.

The other day the Mac refused to bootup and it had worked without problem the week before - I turn it on (via a surge suppressor), it begins the boot process, the monitor comes on with the gray screen but before the Mac guy can appear in the center of the screen the monitor goes to black and the monitor power light begins to blink.

The last successful session with it I had changed the system bootup from external to internal drive system a couple of times but it had booted fine the last time I changed it to internal drive before I shut down for the night. The peripherals seem to power on successfully (scanner, modem, external drive, printers on switch).

I have tried to boot from a diskette and from CD ROM with no success (the same sequence as above so apparently the computer never tries to read the floppy or CD drive). I can't tell if the internal drive spins up or not. I have opened and checked all external and interanl connections, the computer has not been jostled or moved, there has been no storm or power fluctuation I am aware of. I tried disconnecting the SCSI chain completely from the computer. All the above attempts gave the same problem as referred to above.

Hi Hyche, welcome to Nowonder, I'm robertw.
Sounds like the battery is bad. When you open the case, you'll see the battery, just take it out and get a replacement and give it a try. Radio Shack or an electronics store will have replacemnts.
