The last time i shut down my computer and rebooted, my browser has reset it self to default settings and no matter what I do when I restart it returns to defult.. I tired trashing the Netscape preferences, but still comes up default settings. I even reinstalled Netscape and it still will not save settings.. Any Idea what is going on.....Please help.... Rob

Rob,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
Go to Applications>Utilities and start up Disk Utility.
What that opens click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar at the left.
Now click on Repair Permissions.
When done, quit Disk Utility.
Now go to:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/9633
Download and install Macaroni.
Start it up and have it do all the jobs.
Then set it up to do those routine jobs every time you start up.
Those routine jobs are normally done by the system late at night. When you shut down the computer, those jobs do not get done. They help to keep the computer running smoothly.
Let me know if this helps to correct the problem.

Rob,
This is strange. Do you have Netscape installed in the Applications folder (for OS X) ? When you start up Netscape what icon are you using (in the Applications folder or the Dock) ?
Is there any reason why you are not using Safari?
Just to double check something. Go to Hard drive>Users
Click once on the folder (or house icon) with your name on it.
Go to the File Menu and select Get Info.
In the window that opens, under the General section there is Locked with a box next to it. Does it have a check mark on it? If so, click on it so the check mark goes away.
Under Ownership and Permissions, does it show you can Read & Write?
Click on the arrow next to Details. It should show that you (your user name) is the owner and under Access you can read and write.
Let me know if this is the case or not.
Go to System Preferences(light switch in the dock)>Accounts
Click on your user name.
Are you set as the administrator or a limited user?

Cheryl,
Yes I do have Netscape installed in the osx application folder and I have its icon in the doc. I have been using the same one now for as long as 7.2 has been available without any problems. The reason I am using Netscape and not Safari, which our daughter uses on our computer is just the options and we like the format better.
Under Users name and general information, the box is not checked. It also says that I can read and write too. Also I am the Administrator in System preferences..Also we did a search for our problem and came up with this URL it appears others are having this problem too. Maybe this can help you in aiding us:

Rob,
You have been doing homework ! It did give me more ideas.
When you trashed the Netscape preference file was it named: org.mozilla.navigator.plist ?
There are more files that hold preferences.
Go to Home>Library>Mozilla>Profiles>Default
In there should be a folder with a strange name using random letters and numbers. Open that.
Trash prefs.bak and prefs.js
Empty the trash.
Now give Netscape a try.

Well Cheryl,
I actually had trashed the java script preferences this morning but did not know about the Bak file.. Anyway I trashed them and rebooted, but unfortunately with the same results.. The Jave script came back but the Bak file did not... I think it is not looking good...:-(

Rob,
This is becoming more and more frustrating for me as well as for you. Netscape seems to have a mind of it's own.
You have trashed the preference files, repaired permissions, but have you repaired the drive itself? Try this and let me know if it helps in any way.
s the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."
Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.
When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.",
6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.

Cheryl,
I did what you had told me, but the string was incorrect. I got a message back saying the string was not identified, but said, if I want to make modifications write:
/sbin/fsck- y So I tried it and it went through its thing and said" Incorrect size for location store, should be 0 and is 4869(or something) so it did repairs and I tried the string again and it said it was o.k. So I rebooted and the browser came up with the side bar and the email was still bad, so I turned of the side bar and made corections to the e-mail settings and closed Netscape and opened it back up and Taaaa Daaaaa It worked!!!!! :-) Your awesome Cheryl and I apprecieate all that you have done. I wish I could do something for you in return. My wife and I really do apprecieate it!!! Would it be o.k. if I copy and paste your last instructions to the blog that I refered you to so those people can fix the problem also? Or would you rather I send them to your site to register and request you for your help so you can get the credit... Let me know and thank you once again for helping out... Rob

Rob,
I am glad things are back to the way they should be. Yes, you can copy and paste the instructions, just make sure you correct the command string and note that this is for 10.3.9 (your OS version). {strange that the -fy didn't work}.
You can also mention that macosx.com was where you got the fix. You do not need to mention me in particular.
