Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Other
Computer Type: Apple
Model: 6116/66
RAM: 24meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
Are you ready for a challenge?
I have a Performa 6116cd with 24M 700M HD and OS8.1.
Some times when I start my Mac, I get a flashing question mark and my Mac refuses to recognize my hard disk or
anything on the desktop. The very first time this happened, I used Norton Disk Doctor 3.5.2 and somehow was able to
load the driver for the hard disk from that application (I wish I could do it again, but have not been able to repeat it!) I can
not find anything on my disk when it is in this state. The only way that I have been able to correct the situation when it
happens, is to keep restarting the computer until it recognizes the Hard Disk (usually about 5 times). When I restart the
computer after 'fixing' it in this fashon, it will boot properly for the rest of the day. but there is a 50/50 chance it will boot
properly the next day, and a it will not usually not boot properly if I let it sit for two days without starting it.
I ran Apple's Disc Doctor that came with 8.1 and it says there are no problems with my hard disk
I ran Techtool Pro 1.05 to check all hardware and have not found anything wrong with any hardware I have.
I ran all Norton Utilities 3.5.2 (the latest since this week) and made sure that I used only updated versions.
I did a clean install of my system (8.0) and updated it with 8.1.
I installed Apple's 1.5 Driver update.
Of course I threw away the finder preferences, zapped the PRAM, and rebuilt the desktop folder many times.
I can't think of anything thatI have done to cause this!

David,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to help answer your question. My email address is .
It's a challenge all right: you seem to have rounded up all the usual suspects.
What it sounds like is some intermittent hardware problem on your SCSI bus.
If you have any external SCSI devices connected, disconnect them and see what happens.
If this problem occurs with no external SCSI devices, you have to wonder if you have recently had the case off. If you have, take it off again (keep the Mac plugged into the 110 volt power, but turned off, of course) and check gently for loose connectors on the SCSI bus.
The other thing you might try is to use Drive Setup to reinstall the disk driver. (Is that what you did before?)
Please let me know what happens. If the problem hasn't been fixed, please also tell me what SCSI devices (internal and external) you have.
Good luck,
ed
