Running sys 10,2,8 on Imac G4, 800 Mhz.
all of a sudden, on restart, 2 problems,
file "pbc" crashed [console came up]. on every startup.
then, after repair permissions, via disk utility, ran diskwarrior, ran norton disk doctor,[could not repair everything] from the CD..nothing changed. the 'pbcp file seem corrupted, so i did trash it, hoping it would be re-insatlled on restart.silly me.
after that, on restart, got message thatI could not copy and paste between classic program documents and system X program documents. tho said i could paste between system X documents.
however, I find i cannot copy and paste anything in system X. in 'stickies' for instance i Can 'copy' a note, but then cannot switch to "mail" and paste the same.
on my desktop, cannot move iconst anywhere when click-hold the mouse.
before i could do these with ease.
and now , new wrinkle, disks from my superdrive do not load in sys X. If i boot inot sys 9, then I can losd disks.
to summarise:

cannot move icons on desktop at all with click/hold mouse[can clean up desktop from finder menu]

cannot copy and paste text from one program to another, or in same program , one document to same document.

superdrive will not mount disks when booted in sys X

Appreciate any help.

thank you,

bradclif

Hello Byron,

thank you for turning to MacOSX for support. My name is Martin, and here's what I'd do: As a last resort, I'd try to create a new user from the Users System Preference. If that works at all *and* if you experience no probs when being logged into this test user account, then we may look into cleaning out your primary account. Yet it is very likely that you have to re-install the system due to the corrupt / now missing pbc/pbcp file.
While I can imagine that advice to reinstall from scratch sounds rather daunting than helpful, I'd encourage you to take the plunge if needed. I recently had to do it myself, and it was way less hazzle than I had expected. At least easier than hunting down malfunctions.

Best, Martin

Martin,
thank you for your speedy reply, and i will try that as soon as i can. i do have a confession, and that is i have a laptop running, Widows; need it for work, and it is not working, may have to reformat that drive! so must do that first, widows pays the bills, macs make everything else worthwhile.
so setting up a new account sounds. good.
next, i think , if that does not work, may try using pacifist to see if i can get the corrupted file from the install disk.
then, as a last resort, try reinstall.
but of course, backup etc.
thanks again,
byron
