I have a mini Mac with Tiger 10.4.2. I had recently loaded WMP9 onto the machine. Initially it worked, but now when I try to open up a file, I get nothing. The icon bounces for a while, but nothing happens. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it at least 3X, but the results are the same. Is there anything I can do?

When you uninstalled, have you removed all the pref files, and win media player plugin files?
go to your user folder/Library/Preferences, and remove com.microsoft.mediaplayer.plist
Windows Media Player Prefs
also - go to the Library/Internet Plug-ins and remove the Windows Media Plug-in
Hope this helps you...

Thanks for the help. I did what you said and reinstalled WMP9 and it opens up now; however, now I get a message saying " This file may not play correctly because it was compressed using a codec that is not supported". Previously, it had opened and played these same files just fine. What did I do wrong? Or is there something else that I need to delete from my machine?

There are some types of Win Media files that cannot be viewed on a Mac through WMP.
I think you may have downloaded some files that has a .WM9 extension, which you may not be able to play on a Mac, only on a PC with Windows. There are some other codecs (mostly newer ones) that you might not play on a Mac
You might be able to play some of these files with another player app, such as MPlayer, or VLC. Both of these can be found at versiontracker.com
Let me know how it goes

Before these problems with WMP9, these same files, on the same computer, were being opened by WMP9, but once I had these problems and then after the fix, that is when this problem started up. In other words, these files were not downloaded after these problems. They were there before the problems occurred.

Again, MPlayer or VLC will solve the problem, I don't usually go off on Microsoft, it's just not worth it. There's probably a fix, and you could try creating a new user just to try media player, but MPlayer or VLC will do the job without all the grief.
I know this doesn't really address the problem, but here it is:

Thanks for the suggestion. On a lark, I went ahead and removed MPlayer, and lo and behold, everything was working again. Maybe there was a compatibility issue; maybe it was coincidence. Have you ever heard of WMP9 having 'issues' with other third party players? Also, the 2 players you had mentioned would not open all the .wmv files; only WMP seem to. Again, thanks for assistance. At least I know how to fully delte everything off my system, in case an uninstall utility isn't available.
