Knowledge Level: Intermediate
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerMac 6500/250
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
when playing music CD's, my built-in CD player has suddenly started to get the "hiccups", e.g. abruptly stops playing current track (and counter resets to 00:00); other occasional symptoms include intermittent "skipping/repeating" in the middle of a song

this occurs with many different CDs, old and new, so I don't think the disks themselves are the culprits . . .

using Apple CD Audio Player 2.2; haven't yet tried reinstalling software or "cleaning" the CD drive (should it be cleaned?)

thanks for any advice

Welcome to NoWonder Tech Support! I'm Dave Merten from Focus on Mac Support and the iMac Support Center. :-)

I would try cleaning it. Sounds like the a dirty pickup light.
