I want to burn a cd formatted for Windows using the Finder. When I insert a blank CD it does not show up on the desktop. The finder preferences are set to show the icon on the desktop.
Thanks, Barb Packard

Also, in addition to the last thread... When the popup menu appears and I choose "Open in Finder", the CD icon still does not appear.
Thanks again... BP

Barbara,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. You need to double check the System Preferences>CDs and DVDs. The very first option When you insert a blank CD.... Select Open Finder. If you had it set to ignore or something different, it is the System preferences that rule over the finder preferences.
Now give it a try.

The System Preferences>CDS and DVDS are set to Open in Finder, but still the CD icon does not appear on the desktop.

Barbara,
What kind of blank CD are you using? Did you try a different blank CD?
Have you repaired permissions lately?
Using your OS X CD, start up the computer. (insert CD, restart computer and immediately hold down the C key).
When the installer screen comes up, do not click on it. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility. When that opens click on the second icon at the left, then click on Repair drive at the bottom lower right.
Watch the activity screen. If it repairs anything, you will need to run Repair Disk again. You want to see Appears Okay without any reference to repairs being done.
Once that is done, click on Repair permissions.
Now quit Disk Utility, restart the computer, and give the burn a try.

I used Sony CD-R and Verbatim CD-RW without any luck.
Should I be using a different type??
I followed your directions for Repair Disk and Repair Permissions, but no luck with this either. The icon still does not appear on the desktop.
Is there another way to burn a CD that will work with Windows?
Thanks, barb Packard

Barb,
How much available space do you have on your hard drive? Just click the hard drive icon twice. At the bottom of the window you will see the number of items and available space.
You need to have buffer space on the hard drive so that the burn can take place.
What model is your Mac and do you have a Super Drive? It could be with the latest update (to 10.3.9) the CD drive needs to have a firmware update installed.
Check out this web site to see if you need that firmware installed.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=60849
The list of firmwares are here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
There are also several Super Drive firmware updates. As soon as I know you model, I can locate the exact download for you.
While this may seem off topic, it just may correct the problem.

There is 127.57 Gb available on the hard drive.
My Mac is 20" 1.8GHz G5. (10.3.9) And yes it has a SuperDrive.
I checked the site and it said I do not need the firmware installed.
Thanks again. BP

Barbara,
I am frustrated as you should be able to do this. Do you have any firewire devices attached to your computer?
Try shutting down the computer and all devices. Unplug the computer from the power source. Wait 15 minutes. Now plug in the computer and start it up.
Now give it a try.
The only other recommendation I can give you is to try Roxio's Toast.
