We are running system 10.3.6, and yesterday while viewing a PDF document in Preview, I clicked on Check Characters and that was it.

The cumputer just hangs there, even after force quiting and restarting the machine.

I have restarted the machine several times but no luck...the window still pops up "Character Palette" and will not go away.

I even tried to disable fonts on the computer, but that didn't work either.

Any suggestions, Ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Turn off the character palette by opening your System Preferences/International pref pane. Click on Input menu, and scroll through the list until you see character palette, and uncheck the box.

If the computer just freezes up, then restart while holding the shift key, until you see the desktop. You should be able to uncheck the palette then.
