I have half a gig of ram and playback is awful. Is there anything that can allow Quicktime 7 to run on my laptop. 6.5.2 worked great.

Richard,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
Are you trying to view trailers off the internet? What kind of internet connection do you have (DSL, cable, dialup)?
You need to set Quicktime to your connection speed.
Choose Apple > System Preferences.
Click QuickTime.
Click Streaming.
Choose an option from the Streaming Speed pop-up menu to match your connection speed.
Now click on the box next to Enable Instant On.
Set the play slider to the middle.
Do you have the latest update to QuickTime installed? The latest is 7.0.1 and you can check for the update by clicking on the Update button (in System Preferences>Quicktime).

Trailers seem to be OK. Have 512 DSL. These are .mov files that worked fine in 6.5.2. But in Quicktime they stick on a frame, play through sound and end without actually playing through.
Thank you for your quick response.

Richard,
Did you update Quicktime to 7.0.1?
In Quicktime's Preferences (from Quicktime menu when it is open) under Movies have the Use high quality video setting when available check marked.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences. Trash the following:
com.apple.quicktimeplayer.plist
QuickTime Preferences
QuickTime Favorites
Now empty the trash.
There is one more file that is recommended. Go to:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...ecodec101.html
and download and install Apple Intermediate Codec. While the file is a helper for the iLife Apps, it is also a helper for QuickTime 7.x
Let me know if this corrects the problems.

Thank you very much for your prompt response. Did all you suggested. Saw some improvement but the playback is still not as smooth as in 6.5.2.
If there is anything else I can do, please let me know.
Thanks, Richard C.

Richard,
There is more suggestions.
If you have iLife 05 and Garageband... Start up GarageBand, play with it a bit, then quit it.
Check your Energy saving Panel in system preferences. The Tiger install might have set your processor speed to "Reduced" Change that to Highest.
Also: you have to manually enable interlacing in the "Movie Properties" box for each video you play. (Apple + J) This was set to default in 6.2. I noticed that this may not be available to you if you do not have the Pro version.
Another tip was to reinstall QT 7.01, but I can not find the link for the reinstaller. I am not sure the regular installer would correct anything, but you can try it.

We have liftoff. The reinstall of 7.01 did the trick. Thanks for all your help. I will highly recommend macosX.com to all my Mac head friends.
Thanks again, Richard C.

I think I cheered too soon. QT7.01 on my PB still doesn't play satisfactorially. I can view fairly well at finder preview level even enlarging to largest possible view. Quicktime in Safari seems to work adequately but still stumbles. And in QT player (pro) clips stumble or hardly move at all. I've trashed prefs again and again but to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks, Richard C.

Richard,
Do you have ProTools installed on the PowerBook? That may be causing the problem. The only fix right now is to downgrade QuickTime to version 6.5.2.
Apple made it easy by creating a download that deletes 7.01 and installs 6.5.2
The Quicktime reinstaller:

Let me know if that corrects the problem.

Don't have ProTools installed and the reinstaller for 6.5.2 is for X 10.3.9 not Tiger.
It doesn't let you install. I tried it a while ago.
Thanks, Richard

Richard,
My fault. I forgot that you were using 10.4.
The next step is to use the 10.4 DVD to start up the PowerBook. Make sure you have the power adaptor plugged in.
Once it has started with the DVD, do not click on the installer screen. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second icon at the top left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to click the Repair Disk button again when it is done. The object is to have it find and repair all the problems. You may need to click that button three or four times.
When it is done, click on the repair permissions button - just for added insurance.
Now quit Disk Utility, restart the powerbook, Give Quicktime a test run and let me know if this corrects things.
