Hello
I experienced the same problem as in the following link:
http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.ph...n-Os-1028.html
I tryed everything described. Unfortunately I was'nt successful. After installing "ClassicStartup.app". from the installation disc1 and the 10.2.8 Combined update I get the following message by classic startup:
"Resource Update Error - An error was encountered while attempting to update your system folder with Classic-specific resources."
My Mac is a Dual 800 MHz PowerPC G4 with 1.5 GB RAM, OS 10.2.8.
Do you have a solution? Thanks a lot for your help.
Kind regards from Switzerland

Hello, Kurt.
Q1: What version of OS 9 do you have installed?
Q2: Had Classic worked for you at some point in the past?
Here are a few things to try (trying to avoid suggestions that you've already pointed to.
A. Boot in OS 9 and use Software Update (a Control Panel) to update your OS 9.
B. Open Disk Utility, and under the 'File' menu select 'Fix OS 9 Permissions'. This will make sure the permissions are correct on your OS 9.x System Folder.
C. In the Classic System Preferences, Advanced tab, rebuild the Classic desktop.
Now try starting Classic again.
Please write back and let me know how this worked.
Best wishes,
Ed

Hello Ed
Thanks very much for your assistance. Actually Classic OS 9.2.2 worked well until last friday when I started a classic program. I only use classic for a few programs and I’m allways booting with OSX 10.2.8. I didn’t experience any problems like this before.
I tried to follow your instructions. Booting with OS 9 didn’t work. So I copied a one year old system folder on the hard disk. With that one startup with OS 9.2.2 was successful. I also made the update as proposed.
Then I tried to fix the permissions (in my Disk Utility program I could’nt find "fix OS 9 Permissions“ there are only "Fix Volume Permissions“. So I fixed them.
I also rebuilt the desktop.
After that following new error message appeared by Classic Startup:
--- There are no localized Classic-specific resources to update the selected System folder "/Macintosh/Systemordner“ – Please select another system folder for Classic Preferences. ---
Do you have an idea, what could solve this problem? Thanks very much for your help.

I think what happened is that perhaps now you have a raw OS 9 System Folder that has none of the files in it which OS X would have installed to enable it to be used to run classic. With this new System Folder, you could repeat these steps you had done earlier:
"After installing "ClassicStartup.app". from the installation disc1 and the 10.2.8 Combined update"
That might very well take care of it.
I'm not running Jaguar any longer, but in the File menu of my Disk Utility is "Repair OS 9 permissions", although it is greyed out bec. I don't have OS 9 installed.
Good Luck,
Ed

Hello Ed
Thank you very much for your answer. The system folder I copied on my harddisk was a well running backup version with all additions.
I made a new installtation of the "ClassicStartup.app" files. The error message changed again to the first one:
"Resource Update Error - An error was encountered while attempting to update your system folder with Classic-specific resources."
After that I made a clean OS9 install with no additions. I can boot with OS9 but in OSX it does'nt switch to classic. This clean system brings up the same message. I really don't know how fix the problem.
Do have have further ideas how to solve it.
Thanks very much for your help.

I have only the following to suggest. My favorite is #3.

You can check to see if yours are the same by using the Terminal, navigating to the directory containing System Folder and typing
ls -al
and then
ls -al System\ Folder
If these permissions differ, then that could be the problem. Write back and we'll work on getting these. However, I leave to visit relatives tomorrow morning, so you will need to reply soon. Before I leave, I'll return your case to the main pool so that someone else can help.
2. Go the the Classic Pane of System Preferences and select the Advanced Tab. Now select "Turn Off Extensions" and then click on "Start Classic".
3. Now that you have a brand new System Folder, it is worthwhile going through all those steps in the thread which you linked to. Perhaps they'll work this time.
Good Luck. These 3 are really my last ideas. I'll return this to the pool if I've not heard back or if we can't resolve this by midnight Chicago USA time.

Hi, Kurt.
Yes, that is probably the issue with Terminal giving you the permissions.
In the Finder, locate the OS 9 System Folder, whatever it is called for you. In a Terminal Window type
ls -al
followed by a space. Drop the System Folder on that Terminal window and hit Return. That will give you the permissions of items inside the System Folder.
Now type
cd ..
and hit Return. Now type
ls -al
and hit Return. That should give you the permissions on the System Folder (whatever its name is for you) itself. If they are the same as what I reported from a working 'Classic', then that is not the issue. If they are different, then we'll try to make them the same.
My thoughts, however, are that item #3 from the link you already followed with your original question, applied to the new OS 9 System, are more likely to work.
Best Wishes. I'll check back in a few hours.

Hello, Kurt.
Those are the permissions on your home folder. They seem reasonable.
Try
cd /
and hit 'Return" and that should take you to the root directory. Type
ls -al
and hit 'Return' and send me the results of that.
Thanks for your patience.

You're very welcome, Kurt. I only wish that I were doing you more good. My guess is that
rwxr-xr-x 39 kurtraub unknown 1326 jul 12 11:58 systemordner
refers to your OS 9 System Folder. The permissions on it appear to be ok.
Now type
cd /
hit return and then type
ls -al systemordner
and hit return, and report that back.
Question1: I don't recognize
drwxr-xr-x 5 kurtraub admin 170 sep 16 2003 redrawclassic xt
Do you know what it is? Could you perhaps move it to your desktop the next time you try to start Classic?
Question2: What if you try to start Classic while logged in as another user on your computer?

Hello Ed
I tried out everything you suggested. Still no success:
To Question 1
====================
RedrawClassic XT
RedrawClassic XT is a XTension for QuarkXPress that redraw the QuarkXPress document windows which have afterimages when switching back and forth on Mac OS X Classic environment.
RedrawClassic XT is a freeware and you may copy, bundle, or distribute it freely without prior permission, only if the program and the document are retained as they are.
====================
This extension is disabled in QuarkXPress because it dosn't fix the problem.
To Question 2
====================
I also didn't have success to start Classic as another user.

Hello Kurt.
Those permissions look fine to me (the same as with the Classic installation here which works). That is, when it tries to update those resources, it looks like it has permission to overwrite them.
Thank you for your replies to those other questions. I'm not getting any new ideas there either.
You mentioned that you installed a new OS 9.2.2...did you update it fully by booting in OS 9 and using Software Update? Since you are starting with a new System Folder (systemordnung) I think that it is worth trying *everything* in that thread you mentioned:
http://www.macosx.com/content/faq.ph...n-Os-1028.html
You might start with this part (cut and pasted from Cheryl's very complete directions):
Good Luck! As I'll be gone by tomorrow, I'll return this to the pool so that others can help.
Best wishes, and I'm sorry that I wasn't more help.

--------------------
You will need to download the program Pacifist from here:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6812
Reinstalling Classic Startup.app from 10.2 CDs
Put 10.2, disk 1 CD in the drive.
Launch Pacifist.
Select "Open Package" (either under Pacifist's "File" menu or button on the opening window.)
Navigate to this package and "open" it:
/Mac OS X Install Disc 1/System/Installation/Packages/Essentials.pkg
In a few moments, a Pacifist window will open, showing the contents of that Essentials.pkg.
Click the disclosure triangle next to "System" (folder); then "Library" (folder) underneath it; then "CoreServices" (folder) underneath that.
Highlight/select "ClassicStartup.app". (Do not click the disclosure triangle.) Aftering selecting, the buttons in the top left corner will become live.
Click "Install" in the top left corner.
Accept the "Install" of the app, and authenticate (enter your admintrator's name and password) as instructed. Pacifist will start installing the Classic Startup.app from the CD.
During the install process, Pacifist will prompt you whether Stop Installation, Leave Alone, Replace, or Update the "ClassicStartup.app". Press the Replace button.
Next:
Download the complete Combined update equivalent to the copy of 10.2.8 that you're using from here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...bo_10_2_8.html
Locate your copy of the relevant 10.2.8 Combined update package; if it's in a disk image (.dmg) double click the image to mount it. (You need the actual package, not a receipt.)
Launch Pacifist.
Select "Open Package" (under "File" menu or use the button)
Navigate to the 10.3.x Combined update package.
In a moment, the Pacifist window opens showing the contents of the relevant 10.3.x Combined package.
Accept the "Install" of the app, and authenticate as instructed if necessary. Pacifist will start installing the localized files inside the Classic Startup.app from the CD.
During the install process, Pacifist will prompt you whether Stop Installation, Leave Alone, Replace, or Update the "ClassicStartup.app". This time, press the Update button. (You want to update the files)
Once Pacifist is done, you should have an updated copy of the Classic Startup.app.
Probably best to repair permissions after all of this.

Hello
I repeated all steps as described. There still appears the message
"Resource Update Error - An error was encountered while attempting to update your system folder with Classic-specific resources."
by Classic startup. I was thinking about the root log from yesterday:
System OSX 10.2.8:
drwxr-xr-x 4 root wheel 136 aug 12 2003 system
System OS 9.2.2:
drwxr-xr-x 39 kurtraub unknown 1326 jul 12 11:58 systemordner
"root" and "wheel"
"kurtraub" and "unknow"
Is this ok? Owner and Group rights are different... I don't know anything about UNIX and user rights but it looks strange to me... Especiyally "wheel", what does it mean?
Do you have an idea how to fix my problem?
Thanks very much for your help.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 15, 2005 - 5:46 pm
Kurt,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.
Your permissions look correct. Root and wheel are names that the OS X system uses.
It could very well be that the preference files for Classic are corrupt, which sometimes happens. Since you have a fresh OS 9/classic system installed, trashing the preference files will give it a fresh start.
Go to Home>Library>Preferences>By Host.
Now from the view menu select by list, making it easier to find files.
You need to trash the com.apple.Classic.{numbers 7 letters}.plist
Now go to Hard Drive>System Folder with the 9 on the folder icon>Preferences.
Trash the Classic Preference file.
Empty the trash. Give classic a try. Let me know how you do.

Hello Cheryl
Thank you very much for your assistance. I still have'nt solved my Classic problem.
I followed your proposed steps. I deleted the file com.apple.Classic.{numbers 7 letters}.plist
I could'nt find a classic preference file in the OS9 system folder. Maybe because it never started Classic from OSX?
After this I tried to start Classic which failed...
Do you have another idea?
Thank you very much for keeping on my case.

Cheryl - Jul 17, 2005 - 9:26 am
Kurt,
With all that you have done already, have you used Disk Utility to repair the drive or used fsck?
1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."
Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.
When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.",
6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.
Let me know if this corrects the problem. I do have other tricks up my sleeve.

Go to System Folder with the 9 on the folder icon.
Now go to the view menu and select by list. This will put things in alpha order.
Locate and trash the following:
Classic
Classic Support
Classic Support UI
Now give Classic a try. If it starts up, you can empty the trash. If you don't have those files let me know.

Hi Cheryl
I took out the three files out from the OS9 system folder and put them into trash. Classic startup is still interrupted by the message
"Resource Update Error - An error was encountered while attempting to update your system folder with Classic-specific resources."

Do you have another helpful suggestion?

Kurt,
I do believe there is a locked file within the OS 9 system folder>extensions that is causing this. When classic starts up, it looks for specific extensions, then updates them so they can be used in the Classic environment. The trick is to know which one.
Go to Applications>utilities (in OS X) and open Console. What I need to see is the log from when you tried to open Classic. This will give me the information needed. Just copy and paste it here.

Kurt,
In going over this entire ticket and reading what you and Ed have done, I do have a few questions.
What is the main language on your computer - English? What is the language of the OS 9 install disk or the disk that you copied it from?
From what I can find about that error is that the OS 9 classic files do not match the language on your computer.
Are you connected to a network? What program are you trying to start up in Classic?

Cheryl
kuede - Jul 19, 2005 - 2:49 am
Hello Cheryl
1. The main language on my computer is Swiss-German
2. All the classic programs are Swiss German or German versions
3. My terminal is connect by ethernet with a Mac (OS 8.1) and with a Windows 95, which I don't use often.
4. I'm not sure which Classic program I started when the problem started. It could be it was QuarkXPress 5.0, Acrobat 4.0, Freehand 7.02 or MS Word 5.1...
I hope this information helps you. What do you think about Norton System Works? Could it solve my problems? I have an OSX version of Norton, but since I read a few bad articles about it I hesitate to use it. Are there any other repair programs?
Thanks very much for keeping on my case
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 19, 2005 - 6:58 am
Kurt,
Do not use Norton System works or Utilities on a drive that has OS X on it. I do recommend Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro.
While it may seem unrelated, go to:
Home>Library>Font Collections
Trash the Classic.fcache
Now go to System Folder - with the 9 on the folder>Fonts.
How many fonts are listed?

Hello Cheryl
I can’t find the file Classic.fcache
In the Folder Libray > Caches there is a file
"com.apple.FcacheClassicDomain"
Shall I trash this one?
In the OS9 system folder are presently 30 fonts (installed with the new system last week). All the other fonts I’m managing with Suitcase v10.2.2 without any problems.
What shall I do next? Thanks very much for your advise.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 19, 2005 - 8:14 am
Kurt,
Do you have Suitcase managing the classic fonts as well as OS X?
Suitcase could possibly be the culprit. Disable Suitcase- allow Font Book to manage your fonts, then give Classic a try.

Hello Cheryl
I did as you suggested. I disabled Suitcase and started FontBook. FontBook came up with a message:
not enough memory (translated from German)
Error Code: 58
System Code: -35
So I increased memory 6x as much as recommended. But still no positive result...
What do you think about that?
Thank for being so patient.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 19, 2005 - 11:01 am
Kurt,
I think we found the problem. Fonts.
When you did the reinstall of Classic (OS 9) do you remember if you saved the fonts from the old folder?
It has been reported that Helvetica can go corrupt and that can cause system problems in Classic. To correct that, you need to copy that font family from a different computer with a similar set up and then replace the old with the new.
Also, remove some of the fonts from Hard drive>Library>Font folder. Save them to a new folder on the desktop (you can name it rescued fonts).
Now give it a try.

Hi Cheryl
I removed the Helvetica from the OS9 system font folder and saved the OSX fonts on a folder on my desktop as suggested. But Classic startup stops still with the same message.
Shall I take my toolbox with hammer and screwdriver? I'm sure you have a better idea.
Thanks a lot.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 19, 2005 - 4:03 pm
Kurt,
No hammer - yet. Sometimes computers seem to have a mind of its own.
Can you start up the computer in OS 9? Use the System Preferences>Startup Disk. Does OS 9 show up? If so, select it, then do a restart.
Once it start up, Go to Apple Menu>Control Panels>Software update. See if there is anything that needs to be updated. Then try using one of those programs that you were trying to start up in classic.
Once you have done what needs to be done, go to the Apple menu>Control Panels>Startup Disk and select OS X, and restart.
Now give Classic a try.

Hello Cheryl
I made the OS9 boot. The software update aked for Nivida driver, Authoring Support and CarbonLib which I updated. Then I started the Classic programs – everything seems to work well.
Then I made the OSX boot and tried to start Classic again... Result: still the same error message.
Do you have another suggestion? Thank you very much.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 20, 2005 - 10:12 am
Kurt,
Does Classic show up in the System Preferences?
Go to System Preferences, and then click Classic.
Click Advanced.
Choose Turn Off Extensions from the pop-up menu, and then click Start Classic.
Double check the Hard drive. You should have only two System folders.
One with a 9 on the folder icon labeled System Folder
One with a X on the folder icon labeled System
If you have Previous System folder - or any other system folders, drag them to the trash.
This is getting just as frustrating to me as to you. What language do you have installed in OS 9 and in OS X? I am wondering if this is the problem. I have read different theories on language between the two.

Check the HardDrive>System (with the X on it)>Library>CoreServices.

Hello Cheryl
Classic shows up in the Sytem preferences. I tried to start it up whithout extensions as you proposed. But there is still the same message.
Then I found a system folder with a previous System (OSX 10.1). I put in trash.
Now there are only two system folders on the Hard Disk:
- "Systemordner" (System Folder with OS 9.2.2)
- "System" (OSX 10.2.8)
Both are installed as Swiss-German versions.
Do you think TechTool Pro could fix my problem? In a store nearby it is available. I feel bad to keep you occupied by this startup problem.

Hello Cheryl
Classic Startup lists following:
- da
- Dutch
- English
- fi
- French
- German
- Italian
- Japanese
- ko
- no
- pt
- Spanish
- sv
- zh_CN
- zh_TW
All languages are marked. This this is quite a list. Does it help you?
Thank very much for your support.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 20, 2005 - 1:17 pm
Kurt,
That is why it is not starting up. All those languages to choose from.
You are going to have to uncheck everything except sv and German.
First, go back to System>Library>Core Services. Click once on Classic Startup.
Go to the File Menu and select Get Info.
Click on the arrow next to Details.
The first pull down menu is Owner and that is set to System. Right next to is is a pad lock. If that lock is locked, click on it. You will be asked you password. Type it in, then click on okay.
Now in that pull down menu (next to Owner) select your user name.
You may be asked to type in your password again.
After you type in the password, check to make sure Owner shows your user name. If not, change it again. This time you will not be asked for a password.
Now Highlight one of the languages and click on the remove button.
If the system does not allow you to do this, you will need to enable Root User, then log in to Root user.
The Root user can do anything - you just have to be careful. Let me know how you do.

Hello Cheryl
I tried to do as you suggested. After I changed the owner permission to my name the languages stay grey. I can't make any changes there.
What you mean with enable Root User and log in? What kind of steps I have to do to become Root User?
Thank you very much for keeping on.
Kurt
Cheryl - Jul 20, 2005 - 2:25 pm
Kurt,
I was worried that would happen. Enabling root user is easy.
The root user, sometimes called the superuser, is a special user account in Mac OS X that has read and write privileges to all areas of the file system. The root user can move and delete any file in the system, including system files not available to any other user. Because it's easy to damage the computer by moving or deleting some files, use the root account with extreme caution.
Open NetInfo Manager, located in Applications > Utilities.
Choose Security > Enable Root User and type a password for the root account. You may need to type an administrator password to make these changes. You may want to use the same password as your Admin account - just to keep things simple.
Open system Preferences>Accounts>Login Options. Disable Automatic Login if you have it active. Then you want to select Display list of users.
Choose Apple menu > Log Out.
In the Login window, Select root and type in the root password in the Password field.
Now try removing those languages.

Kurt,
No nightmares, just the poor eyes that went cross eyed reading all those zeros.
While those crash reports were from earlier this month, Have you had problems with Disk Utility immediately after installing the update (when all this first happened)? What about Distiller?
It could very well be that the update corrupted several pieces of the system folder.
I think at this point, we have tried to correct pieces of the problem, but not getting anywhere. I think it is time to reinstall the OS X. If you do an archive and preserve, your applications and home folder will not be touched.
Start up from your Mac OS X Install Disc 1 or Install DVD. If you have different versions of Mac OS X Installer discs (for example, if your computer came with version 10.3 and you later purchased and installed version 10.4), start from the disc that most closely matches the installed Mac OS X version. Usually, that's the latest (newer) version.
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
Once done, you will need to restart. You will have a fresh OS system folder and the old one will be named Previous system.
Next - open Disk Utility and have it repair permissions. Make sure you select the second icon at the top left.
Now open Previous System folder> and trash the following:
System
Open Library and trash everything Except Applications Support, Desktop Pictures (if you added any), Documentation, Fonts, Internet Plugins, Mail, and Receipts.
empty the trash.
Next go here:
You need to download and install the 10.2.8 Combo update and the java update.
Repair permissions again after the restart.
Now give Classic a try out.
Keep me posted

Hello Cheryl
You gave me a big job to do. If I make this OSX install, does it not affect the installed programs? To re-install all the programs would be an even bigger job than the new system install.
As I need silence to do it I 'm waiting for the weekend.
Thank you very much for spending that much time on my case.

Kurt,
The archive install will not touch the programs you have installed. It will not touch your Home folder.
You will need to install Stuffit Expander and anti virus if you have one. Any additional drivers may need to be installed as well (if you use ProTools)

Hello Cheryl
I had a hard weekend working on my jobs and I was somehow afraid of the OSX install. So I waited up to this evening. I followed your instructions step by step. After I completed the install and the OSX updates and repaired the permissions I tried to start Classic...
. . . B I N G O ! ! ! !
I can't believe it. It works again. I checked several Classic applications. They all seem to work properly. I don't know how to thank you for accompagnying me on this hard case. Also thanks very much to Ed. I will recommend this address to others who need professional help. You did a great job. If you have a wish, just tell me. Thank you, thank you.
