Hello,
Are you still using the hard drive which came with the system? I had a Quicksilver G4 which had an IBM Deskstar hard drive. Those hard drives were nicked named the IBM Deathstars because of a well known, incredibly high failure rate. My Deathstar failed on me within a year (just out of warranty) so I had to replace it with another drive.
Do you have an OS X install disk? You can boot up with that and run Disk Utilities (it should show up in one of the menus when you boot into the Install utility). Once you're in Disk Utilties, try and repair the disk.
