I have an Asantetalk connector. I have linked it to my G4, running Panther and to my Apple Laserwriter 4/600 but I can't get this to work. I checked the system preferences and the printer control panel, but there is no listing for the laserprinter. Help!

Hi Lewis
In the Network PreferencePane, Make appletalk active on ethernet. If it still doesn't add in the Printer setup, power off the AssanteTalk for a couple minutes and try again.

Hmmmm... Tried that just now, and still nothing. I'm wondering if the problem is the printer driver. Where can I get the latest printer driver for the 4/600 and where do I place the driver when I get it?
Thanks for your help!

The drive is already installed in OS X.
Try adding the printer under AppleTalk.

Bob,
I clicked on the "Add" in printer list and saw the "Appletalk" and "Local Appletalk zone" - but there was no where to go from there, and nothing showed up in the box.
I'm stumped.
Is there a way that you can walk me through the process to find this silly driver, or get this printer activated?
Again, thanks for your patience and your assistance. I love my little laserwriter, and would love to have it hooked up and running with my G4....

In Directory Access, click Services.
If the lock icon is locked, click it and type the name and password of an administrator.
Click the checkbox next to AppleTalk and click Apply.
See if either of these Apple docs help;

Bob,
Okay. I tried all of that, and the printer is not showing up. The link you offered is no help. Sigh. I've sent an email to Asante. Maybe they can help me figure this out.
Thanks again for trying to solve this dilemma.

In the System Profiler, is the Asante or anything listed for Ethernet?

In the system profile (network), this is what's listed:
built-in ethernet en0 ethernet 192.168.1.100
internal modem modem ppp (pppserial)
pci ethernet slot 3 en1 ethernet
vpn (l2tp) ppp (l2tp)
that's it.

Is the Asante connected to a router?

No. It's connected directly to the ethernet PCI card in the G4.
Is that the problem?

It's not showing as connected in the report. Try connecting to the buit in Ethernet port and see what the system profiler then says.

Bob,
Thanks for your genius! Problem solved. I thought that I could connect the device directly to my Mac and not through the modem. When I connected it to the modem and then went to set it up through the printer utility, it finally showed up.
All of the outlets in the modem were being used (older Mac and wife's Mac & PC), so I just unplugged the jack from my older Mac (which I rarely use, these days) and used that outlet.
Whew! I get my 4/600 back.
Thank you.
