I have a G4 desktop Mac with an original Airport card. When I click on the Airport symbol on the top right of the screen and click connect to internet It does not recognise any networks present. I have checked that the network is open and not 'hidden'.

My Mac asks me for a network name etc... seeing as I set up the PC i know I am using the correct network name. At the moment the netwok has no security at all.

The router is also being used by a PC and we have had no problems there.

When I connect my Mac up with a cable to the Linksys router it works perfectly.

Why can i not connect via the airport card?

Hi Rob,

It sounds like the problem is at a lower level than the networking on the Mac - it should at least have the network name in the menu at the top.

The first thing to check is that the network is in the right mode. Your Airport card only supports 802.11b, whilst the wrt54g supports 802.11b and 802.11g. Can you log into the Linksys router and check it's operating in mixed mode (i.e. 11b and 11g) and not just 11g.

The next thing to check is range - but I guess if you're connecting via ethernet the machine is close to the access point. If not, put it right next to it, just to make sure you're not too far away.

You could also download and install Macstumber: http://www.macstumbler.com which will search for wireless networks in the area, and should report all the networks it can see.

On the Linksys, is it set to broadcast its SSID. You can switch this off once you are connected, but it would be worth switching it on if it's off just to make diagnosis easier.

As a final suggestion, can you check the MAC filtering on the Linksys box - if it's switched on, you will need to add your Airport's MAC address to the allowed list.

There's a few things to run through there- let me know how you get on.
