Hello.

I'm having problems to connect my Mac (OS X) to the internet. I have my Mac and a PC (windows XP) connected both directly by cable, through the built-in Ethernet port, to an internet router (with WiFi card) and the router is connected to the modem.

I've tried to configure the Network system prefs as Built-in ethernet using DHCP.
I asked the assistant to help me, I followed the instructions and chose the LAN connexion, but I can not access the network automatically.
The assistant ask me to assign manually the IP address, Subnet mask, Router address and DNS hosts. I have looked for these on my PC where internet is working fine (using the ipconfig/all command in MS-DOS) and used the same numbers for the MAC (except for the IP address, I have added +1 to the last digit because it is a different computer).

But the Mac tells me that it was unable to establish the network connection this way and asks me to change the network settings.
What shall I use then?

What am I doing wrong?

Alternatively, I also tried to connect using the Airport but it does not recognize the WEP password of the wireless card (it is configured for 64 bits).

could you please help me?

many thanks,

cristina

does the internet connection work when the Mac is directly connected to the modem? Did you set the router to be a dhcp server?

No. I tried already to connect the Mac directly to the cable modem (through the Ethernet),but the same problem appeared. The assistant ask me to assign manually the IP address, Subnet mask, Router address and DNS hosts. But the ones that appear in the PC (and that work for the PC) do not work for the Mac.

I asked the router to assign the IP addreses automatically, but then the modem was blocked. A technician (from our internet server and cable modem) came to solve the problem and he assigned manually the IP addreses (and maybe some extra routes for the router to communicate to the modem), but now only the PC has connection to internet and they refused to provide service for the Mac.

Very confusing for me actually. I do not know if the router is acting as DHPC server now, but probably not.

can you help me?

with the mac connected to the router, set the network in System Preferences to "Using DHCP", open up the application Terminal(Applications/Utilities) and type the following:

ifconfig

and tell me the output

is the networking information the assistant gave you to put in still there?

it seems the mac has assigned itself the ip address if it doesn't have the ip address (manual or obtained from the DHCP server)

"inet 169.254.136.193" is the machine assigned ip address

what kind of Macintosh is it?

I have an imac g5 with mac os x v10.3

i think you are rigth, when i choose to configure ipv4: using dhcp, the mac assinged the following ip adress: 169.254.84.175 and subnet mask: 255.255.0.0 but those do not work.

the assistant did never provide any information to fill in. just asked me to include it manually because the computer could not connect to the ethernet network automatically.

as i said, i tried to include the ip manually, taking as reference the ones at my pc

c:\documents and settings\cristina>ipconfig/all

windows ip configuration

host name . . . . . . . . . . . . : owner-6ezh1z2cy
primary dns suffix . . . . . . . :
node type . . . . . . . . . . . . : unknown
ip routing enabled. . . . . . . . : no
wins proxy enabled. . . . . . . . : no

ethernet adapter local area connection 2:

connection-specific dns suffix . :
description . . . . . . . . . . . : realtek rtl8139/810x family fast ethernet nic
physical address. . . . . . . . . : 00-05-1c-13-5b-ee
dhcp enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : yes
autoconfiguration enabled . . . . : yes
ip address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 82.158.231.217
subnet mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.252.0
default gateway . . . . . . . . . : 82.158.228.1
dhcp server . . . . . . . . . . . : 10.127.38.130
dns servers . . . . . . . . . . . : 62.81.0.35
62.81.16.131
lease obtained. . . . . . . . . . : 12 august 2005 13:21:45
lease expires . . . . . . . . . . : 12 august 2005 18:19:46

then i go to the mac and fill in these:

configure ipv4: manually

ip address : 82.158.231.2
subnet mask : 255.255.252.0
router : 82.158.228.1
dns servers : 62.81.0.35
search domains:

if i look at the network diagnostics the following network status appears:

built-in ethernet: green
network settings: green
isp: green
internet: red (failed)
server: red (failed)

the diagnostics ask me to restart the device and then click continue. i restart the cable modem and the router but nothing happens. i can not advance further than this.
