No matter what version of OSX I use (I have upgraded to the latest to try and stop the problem), the emails in my "sent" folder of Entourage get corrupted and ends up crashing my systems so that I can no longer send any emails out.
The problem is signaled visually each time: the emails in my "sent box" are suddenly "covered" by tiny gray and white lines. Upon clicking in this gray field, the email sitting in the location where I clicked my mouse will appear. I can get a few of these emails to appear and then a window comes up that says:
"This action cannot be completed. Failure 4362).
Please note that I was not trying to create any action at this point, so I'm not sure what action the failure is referring to.
The past 2 times my Entourage program was corrupted, I could not send out emails and the ones sitting in my 'drafts' box had the same symptoms as the one referred to above in my 'sent' box. The same failure notice came up because their was a corruption in those files and they could not be sent out.
I have paid a MAC expert to come out 3 times now for this problem. The last time it happened (6 months ago), he threw out my MAC OS system and installed his own (10.3.9) on my computer.
I am left to think that this is a major disk problem and cannot sink more money into having a MAC expert come look at it, only to fix it temporarily. Sigh.
Please advise.
Yours,
Desperate

Hi Alex,
Have you tried to simply rebuild your Entourage Database?
If not, hold down the 'Option' key while you launch Entourage. A window with 2 options will appear. Do both the regular and advanced rebuilds (you will have to quit entourage and relaunch holding down the option key to do the 2nd rebuild).
Please let me know if this helps.

Hi Phil,
When I hold down the 'option' key and relaunch entourage, nothing happens. No window comes up talking about the rebuild. Zilch. I had the idea to rebuild my desktop before getting on this Website to ask advice and the same thing happened. I held down the 'option' (apple) key and the control key at the same time while rebooting the computer. Any other suggestions?
Alex

Alex,
Try holding down 'Option' and the 'Apple' Keys while launching entourage, might have better luck with that.
astayden - Aug 13, 2005 - 3:55 pm
Hmmmm. Maybe the problem is that I am on a German keyboard. There is an 'alt' key next to the apple key and on the left side of the 'alt' key isa 'cntrl' key. So which one is the 'option' key? Sorry to be so dumb about this, but I am an American living in Berlin. I am using a German keyboard but it is set to American keys, which means that just have to know what buttons to put my fingers on...
Left, right, or center? Which one should I leave out?
peedee - Aug 13, 2005 - 3:57 pm
Try the right button and the centre button. the same should go for rebuilding your desktop

Again, nothing happened, either when I tried to rebuild Entourage or my desktop. When I called the MAC expert here yesterday, he ran me through a disk repair over the phone that didn't help with my entourage problems.
I've been using email ever since I wrote you that my 'sent' email was corrupted. But weirdly, when I got on the computer tonight, it looked as though everything was back to normal. I'm still following your advice though, as I'm sure it's still screwed up and that it's an intermittant problem. Last time it got so bad that all of my outgoig emails got clogged in the server and I hate to get rid of my entourage and reinstall it.
In Entourage, I many saved emails organized into folders. I normally toss deleted items every day and keep my inbox and my outbox clean (20 emails max). Could having to many saved emails in folders cause the problems I've been having.
Thanks for your time and your help, Phil. I really appreciate it!

Hey Phil,
So how do I rebuild my desktop and Entourage? The keys you told me to hold down (the one on the right and the one to the left of it) do not do anything.
Please advice.
Thanks,
Alex

Hi Alex,
I'm a bit over my head, now that I know you're on a german keyboard. I'm going to toss your query back into the mix and hopefully someone else will be able to get further than i have.

Alex,
The Option key is the alt-key, just left to the Apple key
The Apple key is also named as the "Command" key
The 3rd one, left to the Option key, is the Control key
How to Rebuild
Entourage 2004
--------------
You must launch the Microsoft Database Utility.
1. Launch Entourage, holding down the “Option” key. Or, launch the Database Utility separately; it is located in /Applications/Microsoft Office 2004/Office/.
2. If you are prompted, allow the Database Utility to quit open Office applications.
3. Once the Database Utility is open, select your identity from the list at the top.
4. Click the “Rebuild Database” button, and click “Continue.” (If you are attempting to reduce database size to reclaim disk space and are not seeing signs of corruption, choose to "Compact")
Entourage X
----------
First go to Entourage -> Turn Off Office Notifications. Now, quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the procedure, instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild. Most of the serious problems you might encounter will require an Advanced Rebuild.
NOTE: Make sure you've applied the latest updates, as the updates include an improved Rebuild engine.
Entourage 2001
--------------
Quit Entourage, and then restart Entourage holding down the Option key. When the Rebuild dialog box comes up, choose to do a Typical Rebuild. If that does not fix the problem, repeat the procedure, instead opting to do the Advanced Rebuild. Most of the serious problems you might encounter will require an Advanced Rebuild.
Now, you should also try to repair permissions on your drive
must be admin)
Launch Applications/Utilities/DiskUtility
On the left pane, select the drive
On the right, select the First Aid (or SOS) tab
Then click on repair permissions and let run; don not worry about messages like " new permissions...."
Quit DiskUtility
Shutdown and reboot
About your error 4362
ror 4362 in Entourage X
The action could not be completed. An unknown error (4362) occurred.
When you try to use Microsoft Entourage X to send or to receive e-mail, you receive this error message: Error 4362. The solution is typically resolved by performing a typical or advanced rebuild of the database file.
Sometimes this error indicates a problem Entourage is having with the Microsoft Database Daemon. Quit the daemon
http://www.entourage.mvps.org/glossary/daemon.html
Then go to System preferences/Startup Items and remove any entries of the database daemon from the 'login items' window. Now start up Entourage again and hopefully the problem will have been resolved.
Note: Some users reported this error when clicking on a corrupt email. 4362 is not the usual error for a corrupt message. If deleting the message does not solve the problem, try a rebuild. If this is your problem, then try the following:
Go to View menu/Preview Pane, or press command-\, to turn the Preview Pane off. Now when he click on the message, you will be able to delete it. If this is a POP account and a local folder, then go to Tools/Run Schedule/Empty Deleted Items Items Folder. If it is an IMAP account set up with its own Deleted Items Folder, quit Entourage so it will get purged, or if set up to "mark for deletion" press command-K to connect to the account to purge it.
Regards
Philippe

Thank you, it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You guys are AWESOME and are truly lifesavers. I wish I could return the favor.
Thanks again for helping me.
All the best,
Alex

Alex, not lifesaver... someone helped me in the past, I do the same job: it is normal to help people which ask for it !
For personal records, and for be abled to help other, which solution works for you:
* the rebuild
* the rerpair permission
* the trick with the daemon
Thanks

The rebuild worked, at least I hope so. I did the Entrougage X rebuild last night and 183 emails came through that had been bottled up on the server, making the other emails trying to come in bounce back to their sender.
Unfortunately, emails were still bouncing back to people this morning, so I did it again, and another 180 or so came through. The weird thing is, 99% of the ones that came through both times were copies of emails I already received earlier in the week.
Is this normal? I know the server is set up to make copies, and while the PC guys who manage our office server say it's a problem with my email program on the MAC (Entourage), is it possible it could be a problem with the way my computer sytems is set up on the server? The PC guys say that when they look at the server, they don't see any mail program on my end coming in to pick up emails. Hmmmmm....
Both times I did the Entourage X rebuild, I followed by doing the disk repair permissions, as an extra measure.
Because that seemed to work (perhaps it didn't and if I do it a 3rd time, another wad of emails will come through), I did not try the MS Database Daemon. Should I try that now and get back to you? or should I rebuild Entourage again?
What is a Daemon, by the way?
Alex
astayden - Aug 16, 2005 - 4:47 am
I forgot to mention that while email bounced back to several people over the last days, some were able to get through. Very weird...

Alex
(1) the daemon is a background task which helps the Office to work. It handles the alarm calendar scheduler, reminders, ....
(2) Tools menu, choose Accounts.
On the Mail tab, double-click the account.
Click the Options tab, what is the "Leave a copy of each message on the server" check box status ?
(3) Is it an Exchange server ?

In Entourage X, getting there is different... Under 'extras' I went to accounts and then under 'pop account' I found the 'option window'. Maybe this is just different on the German version.
Leave a copy on the server is checked. It also has a check box that is checked which says to keep the copy for 7 days. Should I un-check it, since my emails are getting clogged up with all the copies? I'm not sure why I would even want to leave a copy on the server.
There is also an unchecked box which gives me the option of erasing messges from the the server when I erase them from my computer.
Last but not least, there is a big button that says "bring all the stuff over from the server" (it was just translated to me from someone who speaks German). Good to know! Should I press it whenever people call to tell me that their emails are bouncing back to them?
Your last question asked if we have an exchange server in this office and the answer is 'yes'.
philippe99 - Aug 16, 2005 - 10:24 am
To the
> "bring all the stuff over from the server"
I would say, yes, press it then uncheck all the boxes which deals with "leave on the server".
For the
> the option of erasing messges from the the server when I erase them
> from my computer
I think the option must be dimmed if you uncheck "leave on.."
At the office, my mac is also in an exchange server; I only face one time bouncing emails like you, but all of them were junk, so I do not worry
But, yes, in my office or at home, I never leave messages on the server.
