KNOWLEDGE LEVEL: Intermediate

PROBLEM: Hardware
COMPUTER TYPE: Tiger
MODEL: Cyrix 586-100
RAM: 48meg
OS VERSION: Windows 95
SERVICE PACK:

DESCRIPTION:

The computer is just about dead. WhenI turn it on, the fan starts, the disk drive makes a feeble attempt at starting and gives up. The monitor screen is blank, even though the power lights are on both the monitor and computer. Once or twice when I turned it on it gave two quick beeps, either seven or eight regular beeps, the two quick beeps. The system uses AMI BIOS.The rest of the time it's silent.

I suspect it's the motherboard, but I want to be sure before I replace it. What does it sound like to you? Thank you for your help.

Hello Ronald and welcome to NoWonder!!

According to my manual, The AMI Beep code says 2 quick beeps means PARITY ERROR.
This is an easy fix. It means one or more of your memory chips is not seated properly. If this doesn't work, then one or more of your memory chips have gone bad., or there is a problem on the motherboard.

As for the 7 or 8 beeps, 7 beeps means there is a problem with your CPU. You can try reseating the CPU and memory chips. If that doesn't work you can replace the CPU or the entire motherboard.

8 beeps indicates a serious problem with the video card. Try reseating it; if that doesn't work, replace the video card.

It sounds to me like your motherboard my be the problem, but try the memory chips first.
