What program do you recommend to defrag the hard drive on an iMac G5 running Tiger? I have Disk Warrior but not sure if that will do a defrag.
Thanks.

Dear Gary,
My name is Vinko and I will attempt to answer your question.
Normally one would not need to de-fragment a Mac OS X hard disk. Since Mac OS X, like other Unix OS, have maintenance macros (utilities) that get executed to do clean up of its file structure.
What Disk Warrior does is to recreate the Directory Structure Map for your hard disk, which also de-fragment your hard disk as a side effect.
BTW: what cause you to want to de-fragment your disk? Do you install applications often onto your hard drive? For example, more than 10 - 15 times a day?
I hope this helps.

Hello Vinko,
Thanks for the quick reply.
I don't install that many programs at all. It's just that I had a previous version of the iMac (the bendable screen) go bad on me and I lost a lot of info. It happened when I was defragging with Norton. I have since been told not to use Norton on Macs. Now they tell me. But I just was wondering if defraging was necessary.
That brings up another question. I took the old mac in to be rescued and much was saved. Even the iPhoto files. Only when we tried several programs to open them up they would not open. Would you have any suggestions on how to rescue these files? iPhoto, Photoshop... nothing I know of will open them up. The files are there and look complete. There is a message given when I try to open the files but I will have to get that message when I'm at home.
Any help would be appreciated.
Gary

Dear Gary,
Thank you for your reply.
The advise about Norton is correct, you should never use Norton on a Mac; at least not for the past 4 years. Your previous problems was most likely caused by Norton.
Where are these rescued files stored at the moment? Was the old iMac running Mac OS X?
I hope this helps.

Right now they live in two places . On an external drive that the shop transfered the rescued files to and also the iMac that went bad because of Norton. (This iMac now runs fine and was fixed and had most of the contents restored to it.) I believe they are in the iPhoto folder but nothing will open them.

Dear Kelly,
Thank you for your reply.
Is your external hard drive a Firewire drive? You may be encountering a permission problem when trying to access these files. What you should do is to uncheck the "Ignore Permission on this Drive" checkbox found in the "Get Info" of the Firewire external drive.
I hope this helps.
