Hi,
I would like to know how to change the language of the dictionary cause all my OS is in french so i found that strange to have a English/American dictionary. I have taken a look at "preferences" and nothing about the language.

Toutpt,

when you are typing a document in TextEdit or writing an email in Mail just ctrl-click in the body of the document and choose "Spelling" from the pop-up menu that appears and select "Spelling...". This opens a window which allows you to set the language for spell checking.

Allan,
thanks for your answer, but i have no problem with the spell checking , only with the Dictionary application that you can have with Dashboard or directly in the applications floder (with an "Aa" icon)
I can choose between "New Oxford American Dictionary" and "Oxford American Writers Thesaurus" but it is an only english language.
Also i have noticed that the whole application Dictionary is in english

Thanks

I gather you are using Tiger. Sorry, but I have no experience with 10.4 yet. I'm sending your question back to the open pool for someone else to look at.

Hi Toulpt,

As far as I can tell, the Dictionary application and Dashboard widget are set up for English only.

I looked under the Preferences menu item in Dictionary.app, and I saw that you could choose which dictionary to use by a checkbox.

The dictionary file itself is located at /Library/Dictionaries and it has a .dict suffix. I would guess that if you were able to find a French dictionary in .dict format, you could install it there for Dictionary.app.

I did a search on Google and on the Apple site, but didn't find anything.

I'm sorry that I couldn't be of more help.

Best Regards,

John Haffner

Hi John Haffner, and thank you for your answer.
I have found a file .dict that is a french dictionary.
I have put it in the /Library/Dictionary/ with the other , but il doesn t appear at all. So i guess that we need to write that in a file config or something else.

Hi Toulpt,

You've done what I would have done.

The only other thing I can think of is to log out and log back in again to see if the application will recognize it.

I'm going to send this back to the pool tto see if someone else has an answer for you.

Best Regards,

John Haffner

Have you tried dragging the .dict file (the french one) into the preferences pane of the dictionary app? (There where it say to drag dictionaries in the order that you prefer)

Another way of adding the french dictionary might be (do not blame me if it does not work) to put the french .dict file in the directory where the others are as well. Log in and out and see if it is working now. If that does not work, delete the us english .dict file (I assume that you do not need it) and rename the french .dict file so that it has the name of the deleted us english one.
Log in and out an see if that is working!

I hope I could be of help!

i have tryed your trick but that doesn t working.

I have discovered that the dic file use by the application is not a simple file. In fact you can open it with a list view so it opens like a folder this file that contains tones of stuff like images, an other file. So my dic file is not as well like this one.

So apple has created his own format dic ? So , don't know what to do cause, even if i rename the file, dictionary use it as well :/ This is the apple god that say which file use may be ^^ . Now just hope to find one french dic that is done by "apple france" or i don't know

The problem now is to find a "dic" file for french language that is support by the dictionary application .
Don't think that is possible at the moment.
