I did a disk repair on my Seagate 160 GB firewire drive. I got a message saying, "The underlying task reported failure on exit". Then my drive vanished from my desktop. Disk Utility now referred to my drive as 'disk1s3' which was its old Disk Identifier, but it can no longer access any of the data.

The log had only this to say:

Verify and Repair disk “Trixie's Storage”
Checking HFS Plus volume.
Catalog file entry not found for extent
Volume check failed.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

Disk Utility stopped repairing “Trixie's Storage” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error

Drew, welcome on macosx.com

Is you Seagate a recent drive ? If not, perhaps does he need a firmware update ?
But I guees it was working before the DU run , right ?

Do you have DiskWarrior (the only soft which can try tor repair such problem) ?

Could try to boot on your install disc and run DU from this CD to see if something changes ?

One thing you could also try: unplug the drive from the mac and the electical outlet. Unplug the mac from the electrical outlet -remove battery if powerbook-.
Let them in peace for 10 minutes. Repower the mac and reboot it.
reconnect the drive to tha mac and power on it. Does it mount ?

Regards
Philippe

Yes the disk was working wonderfully before it dropped dead. I don't have an install disk handy at the moment, it's in storage some several hundred miles away.

I tried the powerdown and let 'em sit routine. Got the expected "Ignore, Eject, Initialize" message when I connected them back.

I've got disk warrior, but not 3.0.3.

3.0.2 hangs while locating directory data when attempting to rebuild and gives an additional message of "Speed inhibited by disk malfunction".

Well,
DW gives the answer: the disk seems to be out.
is the drive still under warranty ?

I would try with the install disc if DisckUtility of the install disc does no see it
Perhaps some friend/relative near you have such discs ?

I crossed my fingers, sprinkled chicken blood, danced a bit, and then invoked the spirits of the winds and ran DW rebuild once more overnight. It seems like it was able to rebuild.

I suppose all that's left is to let it replace what's there and hope it isn't missing anything I really liked.
