Hi;
i have the dubious pleasure of maintaining the iBooks in my workgroup. We have just upgraded them to Tiger 10.4.2.
One of the machines is running really slowly, so After running DiskUtiility, I attempetd to use Diskwarrior. After rebuilding the directory it informed me that it needed 200Mb of free contiguous free space for a fail-safe backup. How should I react to this message? what should I do?
is Diskwarrior the optimum tool for this or is there something better?
many thanks

Tony,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Disk Warrior is one of the best utilities for OS X. First make sure you are using version 3.0.3 for Tiger.
Disk Warrior more than likely gave that warning because the hard drive is starting to get full. It is recommended that you keep 15% of your hard drive free for optimal performance. If you do not have that, you will need to back up files on a CD, zip disk or external drive, then delete them from the drive and empty the trash.
Is there anything on that machine that is running in the background. Double check the login items in the Accounts panel (system preferences). Let me know what is listed there.

Hi Cheryl:
Thanks for that it pretty much confirms what i thought
1.'Our version of DW is 3.o so I will upgrade that ASAP.
mark tend=s to run his Mac with up to7 apps open at any one time.Ugh!
he has 6Gb left on a 40Gb drive. Is that enough?
I will carry out what you have suggested. If it does not work, I will get back to you. It may be a week or so. Will that be OK?
Cheryl - Aug 10, 2005 - 10:26 pm
Tony,
6 GB is cutting it close, but running with 7 applications open at one time will slow down the machine as each one has grabbed memory. How much memory is installed on it? 512 MB will give a more speed.
This ticket will automatically close in three days without any response, so I will keep it open by sending you reminders that I am waiting for your results.

Hi Cheryl:
I have downloaded the upgrade to DW 3.0. The rest of it pretty much makes sense. The iBooks are all 933 PPC WITH 640Mb RAM, but they get to run apps like Adobe CS2, Freehand and dreamweaver.
I have tried to suggest to Mark that he run fewer apps and open docs, and reboot from time to time.
but that should be fine. many thanks for your help.

Hi:
The problem continues....
I have upgraded the Diskwarrior version to 3.0.3, as well as clearing out the HDD to 8.6Gb of space. DW e wants 128Mb of free contiguous space to perform a fail-safe directory rebuild.
Q. do I continue and ignore the warnings?
If not, how do I get the free space? Assuming DW is the defragmenter, and it doesn't want to go ahead, is there some other utility i should use first?
It all seems a bit chicken-and-egg to me
many Thanks
Tony

Tony,
Disk Warrior is just giving you a warning that you should have 128 MB of free space, since you have 8 GB, you should continue.
Are you using Disk Warrior on a CD to start up the iBook? (that would mean that you used the Disk Warrior update to create a new bootable CD).

Hi Cheryl:
Do you ever Sleep? Thanks for the fabulously quick response!
OK, I will continue?
Yes the version I have of DW is one created from the update-ie bootable disk that I am using to start up the machine.
With reference to Email One I have the following things running at startup:
Virex login-although I have(tried) to delete/uninstall this
Skype
iCal Alarm scheduler
microsoft Mouse helper
System events
Nb I have tried( unsuccessfuly to strip iDisk and .mac out of the machine. No go so far. but that is another( if related) issue.
Tony

Tony,
I wonder if all these issues are caused by Virex? There is a compatibility issue with Virex and OS X 10.4.
Here is where you can download the uninstaller:
http://www.nai.com/us/downloads/beta/virex/virex76.htm
You can leave iDisk and .mac on the machine as they are not the culprit for you troubles.
You do not need System Events in the login items. Just click on the name, then click on the minus button at the bottom.
The rest should be okay.
Once you get rid of Virex, then run Disk Warrior. I bet things will go smoothly.

Hi:
I have downloaded the appropriate uninstaller from the link you gave me. It is a .zip file. It will not unarchive with either BOMArchive helper or Stuffit. message reads
Error 1- not permitted.
I have tried it in different palces, including the Apps folder. No good. Same reply
????

Tony,
What version of Stuffit do you have? What browser did you use to download it with?
Stuffit should be version 9.02 and that version does unzip files.

I will try it, then unzip it, and place it on a web site for you to download direct from.

Hi Cheryl:
i ent back to the site and note that the page link has expired.
Any way i need 7.5.1.
You could always send it as an attachment...
Cheryl - Aug 17, 2005 - 10:46 pm
Tony,
I failed to remember that McAfee's web site is a Windows support only. I did find another uninstaller that should do the job. (You can delete the file you downloaded previously).
http://www.macfixit.com/article.php?...50304004522568
Click on Virex Uninstall Command. It is a direct download link.
Now you should be okay. (and now it is time for me to get some shut eye. :-)

Hi cheryl;
i Googled my way to a non-beta version on nai's site, which downloaded and unzipped successfully. It ran a small script which, as far as I can see has worked successfully.
I will try later to run DW again and report tomorrow. Many thanks
