DESCRIPTION:
Hey guys, I need some help this time!
I am building a PC out of some old parts. I've got everything working but I've made an error while installing MS-DOS! I got the basic components of DOS 6.0 on the hard drive and got it working fine.
However, then I tried to run a DOS 6.2 upgrade program. I didn't realize it needed a complete install of DOS 6.0 and so I had to abort the setup program during install. I later lost the Uninstall disk! I tried copying over all the MS-DOS 6.0 files to the HDD, and then ran the 6.2 setup again. This time it died when it tried to read from another sector that had gone bad. I had to shut down, run Scandisk, and then try to boot the computer from the hard drive. All I get is a message saying "MS-DOS 6.2 setup did not finish...insert the Uninstall #1 disk and press ENTER." I did that, but when I rebooted, I got the same message. This time, the Uninstall program said "Nothing to uninstall...restart the computer".
I can still boot fine from the original 6.0 boot disk. I can't boot from the hard drive...it asks for the uninstall disk. I have tried SYSing the hard drive from the boot disk, quick-formatting the hard drive with the /s switch, full-formatting the hard drive with the /s switch, and finally deleting the primary partition with FDISK and making a new one, and then formatting with the /s switch. Nothing will work! I still get the same message whenever I try to boot from the hard drive. How can I get rid of this without having to low-level format the HDD? I can't do that since I can't obtain the software for this drive. Any ideas? Please help!
Thanks,
Denny Kennedy
Hi Denny,
Have you tried re-creating the master boot record by doing a fdisk/mbr (or it might be format/mbr ...I can't remember right off hand
