PROBLEM: Software
COMPUTER TYPE: Packard Bell
MODEL: Pentium 200mhz
RAM: 65+
OS VERSION: Windows 98
SERVICE PACK:

DESCRIPTION:

After months of running Windows 98 with no problems I decided to upgrade my uninstaller program. I purchased Cleansweep 4.0 and began to install it on my computer. The software said that it would uninstall my Clean sweep version 1.0 so all was well. That was until it told me that I had to shut down and re-boot so that it could re-configure my system.

When it re-booted and before the windows screen appeared an error message said "A required .DLL file C:\windows\system\comctl32.dll was not found". After selecting O.K. a white warning screen appears saying "Error loading explorer.exe you must reinstall windows". Then the whole thing freezes.

Quaterdeck helpline told me that the problem may be related to Clean sweep and I would have to remove the program from MS-DOS.

I have not done this before and don't know where to start. I have heard that deleting files from the registry can be very dangerous. Can you advise!

I have a list of the files that need removing (as advised by Quaterdeck).

I cannot reinstall windows (sounds a long job) because in the safe mode my CD drive is not recognised.

I look forward to any help you can give me!!!!

Many thanks,

Steve Clarke

Well I can give you some help on deleting the files alright but before that lets work on the reinstalling windows bit. For the moment never mind safe mode...if you created a Windows Boot diskette then boot from it and choose boot WITH cdrom support...at the dos prompt change to your cd drive (eg. D, put in your windows cd and type setup....If this doesn't work take out this diskette, reboot and just as it says Starting Windows 98....press F8...in the startu[p menu choose step by step confirmation...answer no to everything except your CD Rom driver in the config.sys....then say YES to Win.com...it should load into windows safe mode and have cd-rom support...

Hope This Helps!
