TICKET ARCHIVE -> Driver Not Installed Message W/hp Laserjet 2100 - Mac Os 10.3.9
LoudenSwain - Aug 11, 2005 - 1:17 pm
I have an HP LaserJet 2100 printer with a J4135A JetDirect Connectivity Card connected via USB to my new Mac G4 1.67 Powerbook running OS 10.3.9.
I've downloaded the "drivers" on from the HP website and installed them, and yet when I go to add the printer it says "Driver Not Installed".
I've called HP tech support and they say it's something with the mac. HP had me trash and rebuild my printer files, but still no luck.
The printer and jetdirect card work perfectly with my older Power Mac G4 tower running 9.2.2, but I can't get it to go with my laptop.
Help anyone????

Louden,
I'm Greg, your Volunteer Tech. I sincerely enjoy helping people set up their Mac so they can enjoy using it. I try, through a series of short interactions with you, to get enough information to help you. Please don't expect me to solve the problem without giving me more info or not telling me when I haven't yet fixed the problem.
I'm giving you a series of steps to try one-by-one (sorry this is so generic, but it usually works!):
Repair permissions (Disk Utility).
Delete Print Prefs - search for files (File>Find) that start with com.apple.print and delete them all and then restart the Mac.
Try Printer Setup Repair from
www.fixamac.net.
Try a hard drive repair utility like Disk Warrior.
Let me know if this helps.

I'm waiting for some feedback.
Thanks.

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the tips. So far I have tried them the first three, with no luck. I will try the disk warrior and see if that fixes it.
I'm wondering if for some reason the driver just wasn't included in my original disk with the laptop? I think it's the laser writer 8 driver? Do you know where I'd be able to check and see if that driver is there?
I'll be in touch.
Thanks,
Stephen

I'm sorry if I sounded impatient....
There are two parts to the "driver" for any printer - the PPD which identifies the model and tells OS X which driver to use and which special print settings dialogs to use, and then there's the driver itself. For postscript printers, that is the OS X native output (every app outputs postscript, ie, there's no driver). The only way to reinstall/repair that is to reinstall OS X or an offending App. (non-postscript drivers have an actual translator/RIP that changes the native postscript into something for the specific printer.)
I guess it's possible that the PPD for 2100 Series wasn't installed because of some glitch. To me that would argue in favor of reinstallng OS X. Who knows what else got clobbered?
After doing the maintenance/troubleshooting steps, have you tried ADDing the printer in Printer Setup? I recommend using IP printing>HP Jetdirect. You'll need to enter the JetDirect card's IP address, then select model, and try it.
Hope this helps.

Hey Greg,
Thanks for the info. I actually went through about an hour on the phone with Apple support today, and they had me re-install Mac OS X. Even after doing all that, the same thing happened when I tried to add the printer. I got the message that said "driver not installed". When we did the re-install of OS X, we did the custom install and made sure that the printer drivers were selected, but it didn't help.
So if I do the IP printing>HP Jetdirect, how do I find out the JetDirect card's IP address? If I can figure that out I'll give it a shot.
Thanks.
Stephen

I've never done this with a built-in Jetdirect Card, but there should be a test/config page to print out. Either holding down a button on the front/top of the printer, or a button in the back on the Jetdirect card should do it.
But wait, you said you have the printer connected by USB. IP>JetDirect is for ethernet/network printing only. But that config page may give you another clue - is USB enabled or OFF?
LoudenSwain - Aug 14, 2005 - 10:29 pm
Yes, the printer is connected via USB, not ethernet/network. I've printed out the config page and it says "USB Status = READY" and "SERIAL status = READY", so it looks like everything is cool there. No ISP info is listed on the configuration page.
The printer works perfectly with my Power Book G4 400 Mhz, so I know the printer is all good. There's just something funky with my Powerbook G4. I called Apple again today and they are escalating the call to an engineer, and I'm supposed to hear back by Friday. They sent me a program called "Capture Data" to see what's going on.
If you have any other suggestions, please let me know. Everything I've tried so far still ends up saying "Driver Not Found".
Thanks.
Stephen

I'm running out of ideas. I'll wait for your results with the Apple engineer -- please let me know what happens.
