Why doesnīt duplex printing work on the mac osx? I have tried two printers with duplex-printing cabability, and it all works fine in windows, but in osx the option for duplex printing is always greyd out. I have tried installing canon specific driver for mac osx, but it does not change anything. There must be a way to print duplex?
Does MAc osx support all new printers, and does osx use its own built in drivers?

Peter,
I'm Tom and I will be assisting you.
I have a canon pixma IP4000 printer and I'm currently running OS X 10.4.2 on my 1GHz mac. I have no problem printing double sided. And I never have had problems with earlier OS's either.
Can you tell me what printer you are using, what OS, computer model etc and we'll try and work out what's gone wrong for you.
Please tell me exactly what you are doing to select duplex printing, in what software are you printing and what you are printing etc.
regards
Tom

I am using a canon Pixma iP40 and an epson stylus photo 890. They both support duplex on windows.
I am using the latest osx with updates, on a brand new 12 inch powerbook with superdrive. I have tried printing almost anything there is to print and it never works.
Does it make any sence installing printerdrivers when mac already has a built in driver?

peter,
The print drivers that are included with the macOS are often not fully featured. They typically get you up and running and indeed sometimes are quite adequate. To be sure you have access to all features you should install the drivers supplied by canon, epson etc.
If you have not done so go to the canon website
www.canon.com and select your region. Go into the support section and click on "downloads" to find the driver for you printer.
Do the same for your epson.
I strongly suspect this will sort out our problem, let me know how you get on.
regards
Tom

I have already tried installing all the drivers. But it still doesnīt help.
Is there a way to delete/reset all the printers and perhaps reinstall the osx printerdrivers?

Peter,
As you have installed the latest drivers from epson/canon you will have the best drivers on your computer. I strongly suggest there is no need to uninstall drivers and replace with possibly older ones!
I am a little confused by the fact that you are having the issue with both printers.
Can you tell me what OS you are running.
Can you tell me exactly how you try to print double sided. Use the canon printer as an example.
When I want to print double sided pages say, from Word, I select "print" from the file menu. I get a print dialogue box which gives me access to many settings via a drop down menu. The drop down menu defaults to "copies and pages" ie this is the first set of settings I can adjust. I click on this drop down menu and select "Duplex Printing and Margin". From here there is a checkbox labeled "automatic duplex printing". If I check this box I have access to two buttons that where greyed out before: one is labeled "reduced print area" and the other is "use normal print area" I select which one I want and then click the print button at the bottom. Double sided printing results.
***hang on a minute***
I've just been doing some web searching.
The reason you can't do duplex printing on your epson is that the printer Epson 890 does not do duplex printing!! You may find there is a grayed out option for duplex printing in the print dialogue on your computer. the reason its grayed out is that the printer does not support this option. You say you could do it with your windows machine. I cannot see how. All the info I have found on the epson web site says the 890 does not do duplex printing! Duplex printing is when the printer can print to both sides of the paper, without you having to reload the paper for side 2. When I do duplex printing my printer will print page one as normal but once its done it will "suck" the page back in and, using some clever mechanism, it turns the page over itself and then prints the second side, without any intervention from me. Is this what you could do on your PC? If so please check what model of printer you have as I can find no reference to the fact true duplex printing can be don with your printer.
I am also thinking now that this is the same for you canon printer. I could not find any info on the pixma ip40. I am not sure if this printer exists! All the pixma range as far as I know is numbered in "thousands" ie Pixma IP2000, IP3000, IP4000 etc There is a canon ip90 which is a small mobile printer (not a pixma) for laptops. perhaps yours is similar to this. If it is then it too will not do duplex printing. The mechanism for turning a page over within the printer is quite bulky and I doubt it fits into a portable printer. Typically a duplex printer will have a slot at the back where paper will poke out during the page turning process. Sometimes there is a slot for using paper in a roll which you should not confuse with the duplex printing hole.
Please have a think about this. Can you clarify as I am now pretty confused about your question.

Yes, they donīt support true Duplex Printing. What I am looking for is a way to use "virtual" duplex printing with manual pageturning which is possible in windows.
I am using all the latest stuff, including the latest OS from mac!
So, do You have any idea? Does only support true duplex printing or what?
Is there a program similar to "fineprint" for windows?
Thx

peter,
Right! Well we've got the duplex thing sorted out then!! Ok, I think I should now have the right answer for you :-) ...
After selecting Print from the file menu (in any application) go to the third drop-down menu (which typically says "copies and pages") and select "Paper Handling"
Here you can select various "modes" of page printing depending on your needs and what software you are using. Some software allows you to control what pages are printed and in what order (I think Word is an example!) so you need to make allowances for this. But anyway, from this dialogue box you can set your printer to just print the odd pages first. After the print you can put the pages back in the printer and set it to print the even pages.
If you look at this dialogue box I think things will become clear.
There are a fair few options to play with from the print dialogue window especially for the more sophisticated printers (eg photo printers). It's certainly worth having a look at all the options.
Also note that in the Mac OS there is quit a reasonable help system built in which is typically accessed from the help menu. Also note that there is often a question mark (?) button on many dialogue boxes - there's one in the print dialogue - which when clicked typically gives explanation to what you are looking at. Of course do not let this facility stop you from using macosx.com!!
I hope this helps you.
feel free to get back to me if I can help you further.
regards
