when i download this application, it just appears as a document in finder. do i need to open it with another app, or download it differently, or what?

Does the DVD Imager name have '.sit' on the end of it?
What version of OS X are you running?

yes, dvd imager ends in '.sit'. i'm running Mac OS X 10.4. I've tried downloading the application from many sites; supposedly dvd imager has been updated and is suitable for tiger. cheers.

Tiger doesn't have Stuffit included, that's why you're having a problem.

I've uploaded the DVD Imager .dmg file you can download from this link;
