I made several back up discs on my work G5 (2.0) and i can't get them to show up on the desk top of my new home G5 (same exact model). Does this have to do with memory? Do I not have enough memory installed yet for the DVD-r to show up? If that's the problem, approx. how much memory do i need for these discs to show up! they're each about 3 or 4 gigs. If that's not it, what else could it be? thanks so much. -j

do you see any errors when you try those DVD-Rs? Do the disks simply eject after a few seconds? Or, nothing happens at all - no response to the disks.
This has nothing whatever to do with memory (or the lack of it) You may have a drive that won't read DVDs (a bad drive)
Make sure that your new G5 will read any DVDs.
Will it read the DVD restore disk that came with the system? If so, try a normal movie DVD to see if the system launches the DVD player software. This should happen automatically when you insert a movie DVD, wait for this after about a half a minute delay.
If you still get no response from other DVDs, then the SuperDrive probably needs to be replaced. Use your warranty.

No error message comes up. I put the DVD-r in, the disc spins and after about 20 seconds it just ejects. DVDs work totally fine every time. CD-r discs work. I haven't tried the DVD restore disk, which one is that?
It's funny, i tried these same discs on a g4 powerbook, on a regular g4, and on a pc and they did the same thing. spun the disc and then ejected after about 30 seconds. But the disc worked fine on my old g5.

Sounds like the problem is with your old G5, not any other system.
This is the situation. The disks that are burned on that system can only be used on that same system, so something is wrong with the drive, probably out of adjustment somehow. The only fix would be to replace the drive in the old G5.

The thing is, i was able to open the discs on a friend's work computer (finally, after trying three other computers). So the discs still work, even if there was a problem with the old g5's drive (i don't have that computer anymore since i left that job). is there anything i can do to get the discs to work? Is there any logic to which computer the discs will work on? it sounds like you're suggesting they won't work on my new g5 computer at all. -julia

You could re-burn the backups on a different computer that WILL read them, on fresh DVD-Rs. If you need the files from those DVD-Rs, then finding a system that will read them should be your next step.
