My G4 AGP came with a DVD_RAM drive which used to work perfectly well for formatting and using new DVD-RAM media. I haven't done this in a while (probably for a couple of system
upgrades) but when I tried to do this today, neither the Finder nor Disk Utility can partition/erase ... the disk. Already formatter disks seem to have no problem. Is there a workaround for this?

Unfortunately, this does not help. My disk is in the caddy, it is the right type disk (since it is a two-sided disk and the other side did get formatted and written perfectly well about a year ago). It is the side that is brand new that cannot be formatted either by the Finder or by Disk Utility. Since it is not getting mounted at all as a volume, there is no disclosure triangle that appears in the Finder at all.
Thanks

I did not know that the DVD-RAM drives in the G4 will format both sides... I was always told that only single sides could be used, even if the disk itself is capable of double-side. I could be wrong. Have you been able to use both sides on one disk in the past?
Have you tried a never-before-used disk yet?

Yes, the disks come in type I caddies, and they have no problems being used on either side.
