DESCRIPTION:

Recently I have received email with attached .avi files made and sent by a friend using Intel Create and Share Camera. When I try to open the files I get a message saying "cannot open file: no suitable decompressor available". What does this mean and how do I resolve it?
PS. I have successfully opened .bmp files he has sent me.

Thanks,
Andy Jolly

Hi Andrew! AVI's are compressed using different methods. Your error message means that your friend used a certain "CODEC" (compression method) to compress the video which you do not have installed. You could ask your friend to save the video in a codec which you both have. To check, go to Control Panel->Multimedia->Advanced->and look under Video Compression Codecs to see which ones you have installed.

Hope this helps! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions!
