Description:
I have a network with a Quadra 800, 233 G3, HP 4MV, and a Fiery XJ250plus.
Today I was attempting to connect a 6100/66Dos to where the HP printer was. I needed an ethernet connector similar to the one that's on the Quadra to I unplug it from the Quadra and when to the store. When I got back, I just plugged it back in (Yes, I know you're not supposed to do hot connections). Now the Quadra says it can't connect to the ethernet. I trashed Apple Talk along with its preferences and put in a new Apple Talk, but to no avail. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Danilo,
I recall reading that with MacOS 8, if try to connect ethernet when something isn't working, then your will get an error similar to what you indicated. What the Quadra is telling you is that it doesn't "see" the Ethernet network.
There is a chance that the cable you bought is bad?
Open the AppleTalk control panel. Make sure that "Ethernet" is selected. There is a chance it changed itself when it couldn't find the Ethernet.
If you have a crossover cable, try connecting this directly to the 6100. Doing this will verify that the Ethernet on both machines is working, assuming that you are able to connect the two.
Try changing the cable from your Q800 to the hub and connecting one device at a time. This may indicate that one particular device is causing a problem.
Finally, I heard a rumor that certain earlier versions of Appletalk don't work well with the one in MacOS 8.x. Perhaps the 6100 has this earlier version. Try upgrading the 6100 to MacOS 8.
I hope one of these helps.
