Description:
I just bought an ethernet card for my kids' computer and I'm having
trouble getting the networking to work. Actually, the kids' computer
(Performa 575/OS8.1/20 MB RAM/MacSense LC PDS Ethernet card) seems to be
ok. I set up Users and Groups, turned on AppleTalk and File Sharing, and
selected "Ethernet" in the AppleTalk Control Panel. Then, when I went to
my computer (G3MT 233/32 MB RAM/OS 8.1/built-in Ethernet) I had a
problem. Users and Groups, File Sharing, AppleTalk turned on - that all
worked. Then, I tried to select "Ethernet" in the AppleTalk control
panel and got the following error:
An error occurred attempting to use Ethernet. Make sure your network
connections are correct.
I have the Ethernet cable (Cat 5 cable/RJ45 connectors) connected
correctly.
Now, in the TCP/IP control panel, I selected "Ethernet" for "Connect
via:" and tried all the option under configure, even selecting "manual"
and trying to put in IP addresses. It still won't let me select Ethernet
in the AppleTalk control panel.
Please help. I could have easily hooked them up with LocalTalk
connectors, but I thought it would be neat to try the Ethernet. Now I
feel like a boob for spending $150 on the card and cables.
Thanks a bunch.
