Knowledge Level: Expert but stumped

Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PPC 6100/66 and Quadra 660AV
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: MacOS 8

Description:
Hi guys,

Even though that I've used Mac for years, I have never got any experiences with Ethernet. Now that I wanna connect my 6100 and 660AV together on Ethernet 'cuz traditional AppleTalk is simply too slow (also with the wish that in the near future I can hook up additional Macs and possibly a PC). Someone told me I need to get two AAUI adapters and crossover cable. Problem is, I dunno the exact kind to look for (no knowledgeable Mac-friendly dealers in my area) and I dunno the reasonable price to expect. Also, if I go for the crossover cable solution, will I still have room for other Mac and PC to be on the same network? Appreciate your help, I got absolutely no idea when it comes to Ethernet, thanks much!

Stuart,

You can obtain a cross-over cable from DataComm Warehouse, you can expect to pay from $4 to $20 depending upon the length of cable needed.

The disadvantage of using a cross-over cable is that you can only connect two devices, and they must both be powered-up to establish a connection.

I would suggest an inexpensive hub, Asante has a 5 port hub that will cost under $50.00. You will then use normal patch cables and can connect up to 5 devices. Asante features lifetime warranty and free technical support. You can obtain Asante products from Mac Connection or other catalog retailers.
