I have a 400 MHz G3 iMac. I think they call it a Rev D. CD ROM only with a 10 GB internal HD. I am running Panther. I have added external CD burner, DVD burner, and 80 GB HD. The HD is a LaCie fire-wire version. My problem is that I cannot even use the DVD burner because the external HD does not work like I supposed it would. I thought it would act like the internal hard disk. However, I cannot use it to load many software programs. They always say there is an installation problem unless they go to applications folder on the internal HD. Bottom line is that there is only 2.74 GB left on the internal drive. Back-up (Silverkeeper) and burning programs (Toast) evidently need at least as much HD space as is available on the DVD (4.7GB) in order to work. I suppose they temporarily store the info on HD before burning to disc. Is there a way to make them go directly from the original to the disk without the temp. file? Better yet, can I make the external hard drive available for this and other uses? Is there a way to make it as usable as the internal drive? I have thought of trying to upgrade the internal drive but there is plenty of room on the external drive if I could use it like the internal one. I am not totally ignorant of the workings of the computer but am not fluent in the language so keep that in mind. Thanks

Greetings...
I use an external HD with my PowerBook. I don't have any programs in the External just files of documents, pics, movies, music.
I've recently backed-up all my Data to my external HD. I did it by simply drag & dropping what I wanted into the External.
When you plug you external into the firewire port, does it come up on the desktop?
If it does, just open your Internal hardrive and start "Drag & Dropping" into the external. It's that simple.
After you've tranfered some data, you can go back and start delete some. That way you can free up some of your Interenal HD space.

Is there a way to make it as usable as the internal drive?
Yeah, leave it connected to the FireWire port.
System Pref---> Click on Start Up Disc?---> Click on your External HD---> Restart.
I think that should do it.
RE: Your other Q's... I gotta get back to you!
Hope this helps.

Thanks Anthony. I have also used the external for pics and stuff but did not try putting the iTunes library over there. Do you know if it will work? Truth is, I do not know what is taking up all the room on the internal. I even have all the classic system stuff on the external. The dvd problem is what really bothers me. Thanks for your help.

Yes, it will. I did it by "drag & dropping". Just double check the External HD to make sure ALL your music is in there before you delete them from you internal HD.
Finder---> Macintosh HD---> iTunes---> iTunes Music
It should show you all your Music files.
RE: DVD
Have you tried using iMovie or iDVD?

Ised iMovie in the past for a couple of projects but that was before there was so much stuff on the HD. Now I get a code 34 telling me there is not enough space on the start up disk. I can work around the problem using Toast and multi-sessions with smaller chunks of info. However, it would be nice to be able to really access the size of the DVD with one session.
