I’ve recently upgraded from FCP 4 to FCP 5 and since my upgraded I’m not sure if its my G4 867 or FCP5 software or or my Sony analog/digital converter (Sony DVMC – DA2) but either way I’ve not been able to capture video using the capture tool in FCP5. Nor have I been able to view video externally. I tested my converter with Imovie and it works fine. When I go to View > External Video > All Frames I’m not able to check off the "All Frames" option. Under Audio / Video Settings under the A/V Device tab the Video pull down menu reads (Missing) Apple Fire Wire NTSC (720 x 480). Can anyone help me with this.
I checked the fire wire and the Sony DVMC and they both work fine. I think the problem must lie in an option or a preferences. I've tried throwing away my preferences and reinstalling FCP.
Can anyone help me with this?
Thank you

Howdy!
I see your question has been here a while, so since I have some limited knowledge of FCP I'm going to do my best.
So, what system are you running? We'll start there with the troubleshooting.

10.3.2

Looks like you need to be running at least 10.3.9 to run FCP5:
http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/
You can use Software Update to upgrade your 10.3.2 to 10.3.9. Be sure to back everything up (ALL files) in case all heck breaks loose (I've heard of some issues with other software in 10.3.9, good to be safe). But you need to upgrade to run FCP5.

Another person with a similar issue but no answer/response:

A reader report regarding 10.4 and Sony DVMC incompatibility:
Reader report: "I also have the Sony DVMC-DA1 analog/digital converter. It still works just fine in OS X 10.4 with Final Cut Express 2, Sorenson Squeeze, iChat 3.0, iMovie 4 (but not 5), QuickTime 7.0 (Pro), QuickTime Broadcaster 1.5, and is recognized by System Profiler. It does not work in iMovie 5, which hopefully Apple will fix, but I think it's because of the new Magic Movie feature, which broke a lot of A/D boxes."
Another thread on this forum with no answer:

Sony's support page for your SONY DVMA-DA2 does not have any useful information:
http://esupport.sony.com/perl/model-faq.pl?mdl=DVMCDA2
I guess at this point I'm at a loss. I can only guess they don't have any software updates to deal with the newest OS X and firewire, or compatibility with FCP5. You might try calling apple support regarding FCP5 and see if they know anything about your sony device.
I can put this thread back into the queue to see if someone else knows anything about this. Let me know.

I posted my problem in the Mac support site and someone responded with the solution below which worked!!!!!!!!
Apparently its a QuickTime issue. Read below.
(I'm cross posting this to the FCP list because it is directly applicable to FCP as well as FCE. This has been a huge source of frustration to me, and I hope that this post will help a few people avoid that).
I was just walked through a repair procedure by an Apple Care person, and it fixed my camera recognition problems (I have a Canon XL1 and sometime after installing Tiger, then 10.4.1, various patches (including Quicktime 7.1) and the latest Desktop Video patch, I've been unable to use the camera with Final Cut Express, and attempts to capture would result in a FCE crash).
The workaround is to download Quicktime *manually*, after removing the "receipts" which indicate that it is loaded. Specifically, I was told to do the following:
1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).
2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.
3. Go to
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.
4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCE and see your camera.
I hope this works for you as well as it does for me. The Apple tech said this was the first case he'd seen for FCE, but that over the last couple of days, he'd had success with it for several FCP users.
Enjoy!
