Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple
Model: PowerBook G3
RAM: Not related
RAM Enhancer: Ram Doubler 2.x
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I just got a Powerbook G3 and I am trying to transfer data from a PowerCenter running MacOS 8. I can't use SCSI to transfer data since the PowerBook is using HFS+. I have tried to set up file sharing or websharing, but i cant get it too work. Should this work or would that have the same problem. Also I can upgrade the PowerCenter to 8.1, but is there some way to change the hard drive to HFS+ w/o losing my data. Any other transfer methods would also be appreciated thanks.

Joe,
Hi, my name is Ed. I'm a No Wonder volunteer and will try to answer your questions. My email address is
Check out Apple's Tech Info Library Article 24398 regarding this situation:

It suggests two solutions:
1. Upgrade the desktop Mac to OS 8.1 and format its HD in HFS+
2. Partition the PB HD, with one partition in HFS, the other in HFS+ ,,, then tranfer the files to the HFS partition, etc.

As for reformatting in HFS+, I just saw an ad in October MacWorld for a utility called PlusMaker that claims:
"Effortlessly makes curren Mac disks into HFS Plus disks without erasing and restoring from backups."
Check it out at

Good luck,
ed
