My wife install an update to the iPod and security software. (we are running OS X 10.3). The computer went to sleep during the install and when it woke up it appeared to complete the process. However, when the computer restarted the finder was not running, but I am able to use the doc and the programs in the doc 9except the finder". How the heck to I fix this?

Brian,
Thanks for using macosx.com.
A couple of things here. Go the Apple Menu -> Force Quit... then choose the finder and hit the "Restart" button. This start the finder. If it doesn't, then things are a little weird. Reboot the system again, and see if you have the same issue. What applications icons do you have in your doc to run?
Thanks.

I need to start a program like Safari before the apple icon in the upper left is visible. Then I go to force quit and the only option is the program that is running. I this case Safari. There is no option to choose the finder from the froce quit window. Application in my doc include itunes, mail, safari, grab, iphoto, address book, isync.
The wierd part is that I can still get mail and access the internet, but no finder. can I reinstall it.

Brian,
I imagine that you will need to boot your system in single user mode and run some various command line options to hopefully get your system back in sync. I am going to send your ticket back to our pool and hopefully with this additional information, another tech can walk you through the necessary steps.
Thanks.
