Particularly when I use Finder to copy .JPG files from my camera card, the thumbnail view is not working.

I now use Image Capture, which seems to help, but some pictures don't have a thumbnail....some do.

Is this a known finder bug? I have heard of a Preview bug like this, but I can't figure out the random nature of it.

What exactly do you mean by the thumbnail view is not working? When you click thumbnail view, does the computer freeze? Do you just see nothing? If you see nothing, this is sometimes because when you delete files, the other ones don't automaticly move up in thumbnail view. Check to see if you have a scoll bar on your right, and see if when you scroll down you see them. This has happened to me before, hope your problem was just that simple too. Also if you're dealing with many photos in a thumbnail view, you might want to grab yourself a copy of CocoThumbnailX, it effectively makes a thumbnail of the actual picture, and sets it as the icon, eg. like how Windows XP looks when you view a folder with images in it.

I can't give a screenshot at the moment, but what I mean is that some pictures show the default thumbnail, i.e. an icon that just indicates it is a .JPG file.

Some files have the actual picture as the thumbnail. There is no "freezing" involved. If I go to the column view, I can see a preview...I am just curious as to why some pictures have the correct thumbnail in the icon view, whereas others have the default "stock" icon.

I can look into CocoThumbnailX as well, but I thought I had identified a Finder/Preview bug, because finder is SUPPOSED to be able to show proper thumbnails without 3rd party software...some of them actually work, but it is quite random. I will try to send some screenshots after I get home tonight.

So how would I go about attaching a screenshot when I'm ready??

Okay I put it on my web site:
http://kinghomesite.com/pics/thumbnails.tiff

Notice that the first icon is the "stock" default icon for .JPG files, most have proper thumbnails, but a few do not, also one in second row and one in fifth.

Is this a finder bug?? I'm surprised I haven't been able to find others with this problem.

I would use an utility like Yasu, MainMenu, TinkerTool, Cocktail, Onyx, maintain, etc. to delete your user/system/Finder caches and restart. This is good housekeeping in general to do periodically, since these cache files are constantly being updated, and file corruption is common.

Also, how is your camera card formatted? You might want to download the photos and then reformat it.

HTH and please let us know what happens. Thanks.

Do you mean ~/system/Finder? I don't see a that directory. I also looked for /system/Finder and /Users/system/Finder.
I don't see any of these locations.

That was a pretty broad list of utilities...so I'm a little leary of just picking one to download and running it.

I just recently formated my camera card using the menu on the camera.

This is a pretty minor issue for me, not worth risking a lot....I just thought I would see if others had this viewing issue and had no luck finding it by searching.

No big deal. If there are no other ideas, I can just close this ticket.

P.S. I have already posted it here:

So if you close this, no need to post again
