G5 Sawtooth Rev 2

On board Firwire burnt out. I purchased a third party PCI card with two Firewire ports. Firewire is not available in Network Port Configurations. I understand that Target Disk Mode is only available for the built in Firewire. Is this also true of Fireire networking or is this an addressing issue?

Was the card you purchased compatible with Mac? Not all of them are.

I had to do the same thing to a G4 Tower once when the firewire ports blew out--wouldn't read any firewire drives.

Which card did you buy? Maybe we can research it's compatibility.

I believe Target disk mode is only available through a laptop computer or mac connected to another computer via firewire. Not through a single, stand-alone firewire drive.

Here's more info on Target Disk Mode:

We can work it out…

Nat,
Thank you for your prompt response.
I purchased the card from Other World Computing. They say the card is Mac compatible.
The card has two Firerwire Ports and two USB ports. The USB ports work fine and Apple System Profiler sees the Firewire ports where prior to installing it read "no information".
I was using Firwire to network the computer to a second desktop (it's faster than Ethernet 10/100). I don't have a Firewire drive.
I will be out of town until Memorial Day.
Again tyhanks for your help.

I didn't know you could network two computers using firewire, thought you had to use the "target disk mode"?

At this point I can only guess that you got a card with some bad firewire ports on it, but I'm not at all sure. Maybe take it in to a repair shop to have them look at it?

Sorry I couldn't do more.
