I am running OS 10.2.8.
I tried to change a folder icon by copying and pasting a gif file onto the folder icon from the "Get Info" window. When I did this, the folder ceased to be a folder and changed to a gif file. I can no longer access the files inside. When I try to open, PREVIEW opens a blank document. Is there a way to change it back to a folder?

Hi, Pete,
You could always try to do a "Get Info" on another folder, copy the icon that it shows, do a "Get Info" on the one that is having the problem and paste the new icon.
When you do a "Get Info" on the one you are having problems with, what does it say under "Kind:"? It should say that it is a folder. If it doesn't, you might try to boot off of your OS install disk, select Disk Utilities, then try to repair the disk. It may have just got confused.

Leigh:
Thanks for your response. When I realized what happened I immediately pulled up a folder icon and did a copy/paste but no luck. The file now looks like a folder but is still treated like a gif. I checked Get Info and the file kind is "Document."
I tried repairing the disk but no luck there either.
Just for kicks I went into the terminal window checked using ls -l and the file starts with a "-" not a "d" as it should if the computer recognized it as a directory. I also performed a ls -F with the same result.
Any other thoughts?
Best,
Peter

Sorry, Pete,
Those were my only thoughts on what would fix it. I'll resend your question back to the pool and maybe somebody else will have an idea.
