6 mo ago I started using the eMac with OSX and was dismayed to find that when doing a SAVE, i can only select a top level folder such as "Pictures" or "Documents". i.e. I can't get to all-any folders as i could with Windows-PC. Now I see that Tiger is the same. Is there any way to store my documents in any folder i want ?? I am getting tired of moving stuff into folders afterwards in the Finder.

Dave,

There certainly is a way of saving your files where you want! This is a basic feature of mac os and has always been a feature!

I am trying to work out why you can't access the folders you want to.

First thing I can think of...
when you select "save" or "save as" you will see the save dialogue window. You may have this appear in a more limited mode than it can be. To the right of the box where you type the name of the file to save, you should see a square box with a black triangle inside it. Click this button and you should see a finder navigation window. You should now be able to navigate around your computer to get to the location/folder you want to save to.

the second thing that comes to mind...
You may be working in "simple finder" mode. This feature of MacosX really designed to make things more straight forward in the finder and prevent younger or inexperienced users making mistakes. It basically limits your options! You cannot have this feature running for an admin account user.

To check to see what is going on, open your system prefs (via apple menu). click and open "Users". first open the padlock by clicking the icon bottom left, so you can edit the acounts and enter your admin name and password. (If you are not the administrator of this computer you will need to ask the person who is to do all this for you!). Now click on the account you are using and select the "parental controls" tab. Un-check "finder and system" - or click configure and uncheck "simple finder". If you want access to "everything", no restrictions you may wish to un-check all the parental control categories (mail, safari etc). Indeed if you are the main user (and in charge of the computer, as it were) you may wish to consider working under an admin account anyway, where all features of the OS will be accessible.

Hope this sorts you out. If you have any problems or additional questions feel free to get back to me.

regards

Tom

Tom, Thks for the speedy reply. I thought the square box beside the name had to do with name selection, i.e. recently used. Now I see a finder navigation window and can navigate around the computer folders. wow! This will save time. thks
