Knowledge Level: Intermediate

Problem: Combination
Computer Type: apple
Model: powermac 8600/300
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: None
OS Version: System 7.6.1

Description:
I have 3 problems.

1- I have a xante accelawriter printer with built in ethernet. When I start the computer I must go to the control panel, AppleTalk, connect via and switch it from printer port to via ethernet in order to use the printer.

2- If my computer is idle for a while, it freezes. I restart, but nothing loads. I then turn off the power strip. The computer turns off. I turn on the power strip, restart the computer and get an unhappy mac for a split second, then the exstensions star to load and my computer works fine.

3- I can't seem to finish downloading the definitions for NAV. It always disconnects at the end.

Thanks for all your help and by the way, I love your magazine. I think I'v told everyone I know about it.

Peg,

1. How are you connected via ethernet to the printer? If you have just a cross-over cable - one wire between the printer and the computer, this is normal behavior. Unless you turn the printer on first, wait till it's ready and then poweron the computer. Another way around is to get a ethernet hub, around $40. Asante makes a great 5 port hub, lifetime warranty and free technical support.

2. I would run Disk First Aid or Norton to see if you have a disk error. Then I would perform a clean install of the OS.

3. This could be related to #2, but could be a noisy phone line or a very busy internet. Try to download early in the AM or very late at night.
