PROBLEM: Hardware

DESCRIPTION:

when i'm useing aol. 4,0 my computer freezes up. sometimes i can move the mouse, but it will not click on to anything.i have to turn the computer off, then restart it again. this occurs 6 times a day and i'm on this around 6 hrs per day. how can this be stopped?am i doing damage to my computer, by turning it off like this. maybe this is a solfware problem. but i still need to know how to prevent this.

Welcome to NoWonder.

First of all, to answer your question, you will not damage the computer by turning it off and on like you describe. However, it is a good idea to wait twenty seconds before restarting it, since the hard drive can be spinning for awhile after turning it off. However, you should not have to go through this painful process on a daily basis and so often.

With no applications running, delete all files in the Temp subfolder of the Windows folder. Then run Scandisk with the option checked for automatically fixing errors. Restart the machine and see if it locks up. If this continues, uninstall AOL completely, even removing the folder. Then reinstall it.
