I have just installed the latest Tiger software update on my G-4 cube. It no longer starts. The grey screen with the apple comes on, but it does not boot up. I have read that the new 10.4.2 is not compatible with the Cube...is this true? If so, why did it even let me upgrade? How can I fix this? Do I have to reinstall the original Tiger? How can I boot from the disk that is going to also be the install disk?
Please help.
Question 2--my computer is set to "never sleep" but it continues to sleep and won't wake up. I have not been able to pinpoint when it does this, because it only does it when certain screens are on. Any thoughts on this connundrum?
Thanks very much,
A. Slater

A,
My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you. Tiger and 10.4.2 does indeed run on a G4 Cube.
Have you installed a new memory module recently? If so, remove it, then give the computer a try out.
Did you install the firmware update?
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75129
Try this and see if the cube will start up properly afterwards. You may want to print this so you have it handy.
1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. At the command-line prompt, type: /sbin/fsck -fy
5. Press Return.
The fsck utility will go through five "phases" then return information about the disk's utilization and fragmentation. Once the check is finished, if no issue is found, you should see "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK."
Note: If fsck alters, repairs, or fixes anything, it will display the message:
***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****
Important: If this message appears, repeat the fsck command until it no longer appears. It's OK if you need to do several "passes" of fsck, because first-pass repairs may uncover additional issues.
When fsck reports that, "** The volume (name of volume) appears to be OK.",
6. type: reboot
7. Press Return.
Keep me posted on how you do.

I am not getting a command-line prompt. It won't go beyond the grey screen with the apple. Do I need the original Tiger disk to do this or do I do it without it?
Thanks,
A

To get into Single User mode, you do not need the Tiger DVD.
Try it again, immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key. You need to continue to hold the Apple Key and the S key until the computer starts up in command line mode.
If this does not work, The next step is to use the Tiger DVD to start up the computer.
Start up the computer and insert the Tiger disk.
Immediately hold down the C key and continue to hold it down until you see the installer screen.
Release the C key and --- Do not click on the installer screen.
Instead go to the Installer Menu at the top of your screen and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar at the left, then make sure you are in the First Aid tab, and click on Repair Drive.
that is at the bottom of the window at the right.
Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to hit that Repair Drive window again when it is done.
The object is to make sure it finds all the problems and repairs them. You want to see no reference to any repairs being made. This may take three of four hits to the Repair Drive button.
When you originally installed Tiger, did you select Upgrade, Archive or Clean install? If you selected Upgrade, that may be causing the trouble.
In order to correct this you will need to install Tiger again, this time using the Archive method. This will not touch the applications/programs you have installed nor your home folder with all your documents.
Start up from your Mac OS X Install DVD. (10.4)
Select your language. The Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window appears.
Click Continue. The Important Information window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue. The Software License Agreement window appears.
After reading or printing the information, click Continue.
An agreement sheet appears. If you agree with the license agreement, click Agree. The Select a Destination window appears.
Click the volume that you wish to install to.
Click Options. The installation options sheet appears.
Select Archive and Install.
Select the volume which already has Mac OS X installed.
You should also select Preserve Users and Network Settings, to preserve network and Home directory settings.
Click OK.
Click Continue to begin the installation.
When done, and restarted, go to Applications>Utilities and start up Disk utility. Click on the second hard drive icon in the side bar, then click on Repair Permissions.
You will need to install Stuffit Expander as that is not included in the installer.

Now go here to get the Combo 10.4.2 update.
http://www.apple.com/support/downloa...1042combo.html
When that is done and you have restarted, you need to go to Disk Utility again and repair permissions.
You should be working smoothly now.

Dear Cheryl,
Thank you so much for your help thus far. Now I seem to have a bigger problem. I have reloaded OS X (Tiger) as per your instructions. Previously, I never had to login. Now when I try to log in , it won't take my password. I have used the password that I used to use for authentication, but it doesn't work. Now I cannot even get past the login screen...which has my name, but won't take my password. Egads...what do I do now? Also, when I repaired the disk, I had to do it about 5 times. There was one error which did not get repaired "Invalid leaf record count should be 2 instead of 166".
How do I login? So close, yet apparently, still so far! Again, thank you for your help.

I've figured out the password problem. No need to respond to it. I have reset the password. However, now the little sun like icon under the apple just keeps spinning. I did get a black screen (command) which I have never seen before after I logged in (after I reset the password), but after shutting down from that screen, I have been unable to bring my login screen back up. Egads again. It was ok for a minute, but then that weird screen came on (with the command line), asking for my login and password. I input them both...but then shut down. Even using the CD as a start up, I cannot get beyond the apple and the spinning sun. Please don't tell me I have to take it in!! Thanks again,
A

A.,
First, disconnect all devices from the cube except the monitor, keyboard and mouse.
Do you have a wireless card installed? If so, remove it.
Do you have OS 9 installed on the cube or is it just OS X?
Do you happen to have Disk Warrior or TechTool Pro on CD? Either one of those will repair that error which did not get repaired "Invalid leaf record count should be 2 instead of 166".
I do have some ideas to get that machine up and running.
A.
1. Shut down the computer if it is on.
2. Press the power button to start the computer.
3. Immediately press and hold the Command (Apple) key and the "s" key for single-user mode.
4. Type: mount -uw /
5. Press Return.
6.Type: mv /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist preferences.old
Tip: There is a space between ".plist" and "preferences.old".
7. Press Return.
8. Type: reboot
9. Press Return.
Does the computer boot up correctly now?
Your computer came with Apple Hardware Test CD. Use that to check over the entire machine. This is just to make sure there are no hardware issues that I am overlooking.

Thank you for all your help. I did have to take it in. Disk Warrior and others did not fix the problem, so it was wiped clean. IT seems to be working now (although not perfectly).
NEW QUESTION:
I am trying to download widgets from the apple site, and I keep getting a message "dowload failed". ANy thoughts on this new problem?
A
Cheryl - Jul 29, 2005 - 4:51 pm
A.
A failed download could be caused by 1) no room on the hard drive 2) a bad internet connection 3) a bad link on the web site.
Those widgets are pretty small in size.
What kind of internet hook up do you have - dial up, dsl, or cable?
Where on the hard drive are you saving your downloads? What browser are you using?

Thanks for getting back to me so fast. I don't think it is a size issue, I have lots of room. I was moving lots of photos to iphoto (another posting I just put up for a question about how NOT to have pictures move to the internal drive when using iphoto with picture files on external drive). I have dsl connection and I'm not sure where the downloads are going...how do I check this. I tried, but the download manager only had the download failed message.

OS X needs 15% of free space. So if you have a 200 GB hard drive, you need to keep 30 GB free.
I am assuming that you are using Internet Explorer to download. Go to the Explorer menu and select Preferences. Now select Receiving Files. You may need to click on the arrow next to Receiving files to get the options. Select Download Options.
The very first section at the top is where the your downloads folder is set.
Now you can go to that folder and trash all those files that were failed.
I suggest you use Safari to get those Widgets. Safari will automatically install the widgets for you.

I have plenty of space (19g hard drive, 14g available). I have tried both firefox and safari to download. NOthing happens at all in firefox, but in safari I get a message "cannot create file". It is happening with anything I try to download. I went and looked at preferences and changed the download from desktop to ask me where to save, and it still doesn't work.
Thanks

I switched the safari preferences from the desktop and now it seems to be working. Thank you. For some reason, firefox does not. I'll try widgets now too.
