How do we correct this proble? The powerbook wont start the computer beyond the apple page. All we see is gray screen with apple logo and no cogwheel spinning.

I've tried booting through pressing option key and powerbutton and it works but with a disk selection after it. I've tried doing option+command+p+r also. How can we fix it to start correctly as it was before without going to the boot selection page?

Hope this is clear. Thanks for your help in advance.

Kevin,

My name is Cheryl and I will be assisting you.

First, get the power adaptor and plug it into the computer and a power outlet.

Now Locate your OS X CD and have it ready.

Start up the powerbook, and hold down the option key. When you get the disk selection, click on the OS X icon, then click on the arrow at the bottom right.
You should now be able to start up, if not, insert the CD, restart the computer and hold down the option key again. This time click once on the OS X CD and then click on the arrow at the bottom right.

Now the powerbook will start up with the CD. When the installer screen comes up, do not click on it. Instead go to the Installer Menu and select Disk Utility.
When that opens, click on the second icon at the left, then click on Repair Disk at the bottom far right.

Watch the activity screen. If it does any repairs, you will need to click on Repair Disk again. You want to make sure it finds all the problems and fixes them. When you get Appears Okay without any reference to repairs being done, click on Repair permissions.

Now when done, quit Disk Utility and restart the computer.

Does it start up correctly?

hi there!!

I've tried what you said. I used the cd: software install and restore cd that came when i bough the powerbook. Did the repair disk, it seems that no error was found. Then restart the computer, and gray screen appeared with apple logo in it. Nothing has changed. Same error as before.

Is there anyway we can repair this? Thanks!!!

Kevin,

Can you tell me exactly what model G4 Powerbook you have? The gigabite ethernet model and the original-first G4 powerbook both need a firmware update.

Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. This includes ADB, serial, USB, FireWire, SCSI, and PCMCIA devices. If this resolves the issue, connect one device at a time, restarting after each one, until you've determined which device is causing the issue.

Remove third-party hardware upgrades such as memory (RAM), microprocessor upgrade cards, and PCI cards. If this resolves the issue, add back one item at a time, restarting after each one, to isolate the issue. Note: Apple does not provide technical support for Mac OS X when used with third-party microprocessor upgrade cards.

Reset your computer's Power Management Unit. The instructions to do this is different for each particular model. Find your model from the list on this page:
