Can anyone tell me how I can troubleshoot this problem? The boot process seems normal in time and services starting up... Once presented with the login screen you have about 5-8 seconds to login or not and you are faced with a screen that faded to a 50% opaque black screen with a multi-language error message that states I need to hard reset by holding down the power button. I can't get any further than that.

There's data on this 5 that I need. Help

This screen means the system is experiencing a Kernel Panic. In some cases this is a related to hardware. Did you recently add RAM to you G5 or have changed/added any other hardware to your G5?

You can try to start the G5 in "Safe Mode" by pressing the SHIFT-key while the G5 boots. If the G5 starts and you can login without any problems checkout the crash-logs with the Console application (located in your Utilities folder).

An other thing you can try is to start up in Single User Mode by pressing the APPLE-key and the S-key when the G5 powers on. This way you can see what the system is doing and maybe it will tell you what goes wrong.

Also there's a Apple Hardware Test CD that came with your G5. You can boot from his CD by pressing the C-key on startup. After starting up you can select and start a hardware test.

Please let us know the results of the crash-logs or the hardware test. Maybe we can help you further.

Safe Boot/Mode... Nothing.. same problem. After logging in with the local admin acct I am presented with that same msg.
I tried to go in with Apple+S...I don't know what to do once I have the command prompt. I used to know a LITTLE Open BSD, but I am not going to be of any use with the command prompt. I don't know what any of the text meant that was displayed.
Since I can't get the crash logs do you have any other suggestions?
If I pull that drive out and place it in another G5 how easy will it be for me to see that as a secondary drive? With Windows it's plug n play, can I make that same assumption with Apple?

Yes, it is fairly easy to use the HD as a second drive in another G5. Just make sure you have the second disc installed as slave.

I'm almost certain this is a hardware problem. Did you try the Apple Hardware Test CD yet? Try swapping the RAM.

Please let me know. Thanks!

I tried the hardware test and the results were passing. I tried single user mode and I wasn't able to get it to boot up successfully. So I bit the bullet and took an hour out of my schedule to reinstall the OS and apply the updates. I am up and running now.
I am sure that I could of fixed the problem through other methods, more efficient methods. I am new to Mac and I needed to get this desktop back up and running.
I have since purchased some Mac books and I am researching some courses.
