After installing Quicktime 7 on my G5 imac it has begun sleeping at random times. I have the sleep set to never. It will happen even while I am working. I have reinstalled OS 10.4 (erase and install) and still this persists.

When you say you did an earse and install and the problem persisted, does it do that only if you reinstall QuickTime 7?
In any case you should get the 10.4.1 updater which you can find here:
http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That may cure your problem.

I have updated to 10.4.1. I believe this to be a tempurture issue now. I have set my machie to sleep as often as possible and let it cool down and the problem has dissapeared.

I don't have an additional suggestion for this. I don't believe it that the iMac should be overheating like that. I think you have a hardware problem, and I suggest you call Applecare if you have that, or take it to an authorized service center such as an Apple store.
I wish I could have helped. I am putting this back in the open pool in case someone else has a suggestion.

Hi Todd,
iMac G5 is known to overheat in some circumstances. Please get a temperature monitoring program and see if the fans are working when it becomes hot inside the machine. You can download:
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10220
or
http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/16609
or

If any of the sensors went above 70ºC (158ºF) and the fans didn't start spinning, try to reset PRAM (see
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 for instructions). That solved the problem for some people. Also, make sure "Processor Performance" is set to "Automatic" and not "High" in System Preferences -> Energy Saver.
Let me know if this solves the problem.

Hi Charlie,
Well, I have done every diagnostic test I can. Hardware Test CD showed no problems, I have reset my PRAM, I even made sure that the Midplane was not having any power issues. The fans do turn on but it never seems to cool the processor down enough. I have checked to see if there was any blockage (dust and such) and it is all clean. The machine tends to be between 145º and 165º but will sometimes surge above 185º without the fans kicking into high speed. The only explanation I have is the weather changing.

Hi Todd,
After applying the suggestions, does your iMac still sleep at random?
Cheers,
Charlie

Charlie,
Yep, I think the G5 goes into sleep mode when it hits 185º. Good thing too, if it didn't I wouldn't have a running machine. After searching the net I have seen a few people saying their macs have been running hot with tiger. maybe it's the core video making the GPU run hotter and raising the inner temp. Hopefully another update will solve the issue.
