DESCRIPTION:

I'm trying to create a letterhead file in MS Word 97. What I want to do with it is whenever I type out a letter or something like that, I would print the document, and out comes the letter with my letterhead/logo on top.

The problem is that if I place a GIF or JPG file into a file and save it, the file blow ups to well over 1 MB (even though the graphic file may only be around 25K or so). This is impractical, as I am bound to have many letters on my hard drive. Is there a way to incorporate a a graphic file into Word, and keep the file size manageable???

Jimmy,

When you save a picture into Word, the picture is no longer saved as a GIF or JPG. It's saved simply as a DOC file. And that file is not compressed very well, so you are usually going to end up with a bigger file than the original GIF or JPG.

When you import your letterhead into the document, have you tried the option that lets you copy the picture in "by reference"? This only stores a pointer to the GIF or JPG in your Word file, it doesn't save the entire picture there. Try that and see if your file size drops.

Andy
