Knowledge Level: I'm New!
Problem: Combination
Computer Type: Apple/Epson
Model: iMac/640 stylest
RAM: 64meg
RAM Enhancer: Virtual Memory
OS Version: MacOS 8.1

Description:
I have a new Imac(My first computer) and Epson 640 printer. It wouldn't print. I was told by COMPUSA that I needed new drivers so I downloaded iMac Update 1.0 and Epson's MUSC645A.SEA.hqx. It still din't print. I spent a couple of hours on the phone with Epson support, and they concluded it was the cable so I exchanged that and redownloaded the MUSC645A.SEA.hqx. THE printer finally printed but there were gapes vetically down the entire page. Epson support said I had to turn off the computer and unplug the printer from the computer then turn the computer back on and plug the printer back into the computer. A test print proved this to work the gaps were gone. Then I was told that I could never turn my computer off or this problem would reoccur, so I would have to unplug my printer from the computer every time the computer is turned on. The Epson rep at COMPUSA says that's not true, but non the less I did have gaps. I have returned the printer to COMPUSA and don't know what to do for a printer. The problem seems to stem from the usb ports, do all computers have these ports? Is there a more compatable printer? I,m thinking this iMac is so new that they may not have worked out all the glitches. Maybe I should take the computer back and get a mac that has some proven reliability. Any advice or solution to my problem would be greatly appreciated. For me a computer without a printer is a pretty useless device!

Hi welcome to Nowonder

Apple and Epson are aware of this problem and are working on fixing it. The usb ports are just so new. As far as what would be best to get that really is a toss up - it depends on your needs. I personally like to have a separate monitor and hard disk drive. But the iMac is great for college and home for the family use. It will take some time though to work out the glitches in the new iMac, but once that is done it will be okay. Best regards sharona@nowonder
